That's true, but I think what you're going to see is the top tier guys (let's say 3-4 players on each team) earning $8m or so and the 2nd tier guys (next 4-5 guys) earning $6-7 million per season. That's not out of whack if the salary cap goes above $90 million in three to four years (which has a good chance of happening). The top end guys will start get thier money, it's the 3rd and 4th lines guys and 5th-6th defensemen that will get squeezed when it comes to contract time.

I don't see it. Teams don't have that many good players. If every team had 7 guys who were that good this league would be UNBELIEVABLE. Heck there are a lot of teams who would be overjoyed if they had a legit #2 Center. Some teams would be thrilled if they had a #1 defenseman. This is what happens when there are 30 teams in the league.

I don't think it's even that much of an overpayment, though, Dion is a wildcard, at times he looks very good and at other times, he makes you scratch your head. I just think that if you're looking for Dion to control the game like a Duncan Keith or like Zdeno Chara used to (he's taken a step back in my opinion), then you're going to be disappointed.

Well i'm not looking at him in a Chara, Keith sense, but I get what you're saying.

When Phaneuf isn't on the ice, the Leafs goals against goes up by one. I've been on of the biggest critics, but he's actually played fairly well this year, despite some gaffs.

This isn't a bad deal/signing at all. No real hometown discount, but he would have made at least what he made in T.O. - in all likelihood, more - had he signed elsewhere.
