Don't Blame the Refs
I went down to Raleigh for the Pens-Canes game this weekend, and I figured I would share my experience and thoughts since I don't go to a ton of away games (I've been to a game in D.C. and in Buffalo for the Winter Classic).
I drove down with my brother, his buddy, a cousin, and my uncle. My two cousins from Georgia were meeting us there for the game. When we got to the hotel, we were talking to the front desk about their shuttle service, but decided against it because the last shuttle left before the end of the game. We had my uncle who doesn't drink there though, so that wasn't the issue. We figured we'd just find a place to park. A Canes fan overhears us talking and offers us a VIP parking pass. My uncle tries to pay him, but the dude is being awesome and just gives it to us, so we are hooked up in that regard.
We head over to the Backyard Bistro which is a restaurant minutes from the arena. We hung out there for about three hours before the game. Our waitress was extremely nice. They had these sweet glasses there from the All Star game last year. Despite six grown men egging me on to just steal these glasses (I was the only one carrying a purse obviously), I asked the waitress if I could buy them. She told me she would look the other way and just to take them. Sweet. This waitress also hooked me up with some free beers, though that might have been because I was indulging in $6.50 shots of Jack. Regardless, it was nice. She was tipped a lot to say the least.
Went to the arena. We parked about twenty feet from the damn door. It was awesome. Had some beers in the parking lot and then went in. I have to say - I like that arena a lot. We were 13 rows from the ice in the corner on the end where the Pens shot twice. Overall, we just really enjoyed the game. Everyone around us was nice. There were a shitload of Pens fans there. And obviously, it was nice to get the win.
After the game, we went to the bar in the arena. We left when they eventually refused to serve my cousin (he can be kind of a dick). Then we went back to the bar/restaurant we were at before the game. Continued to drink. I would like to add at this point that I was probably in the best shape, drunk-wise, next to my sober uncle, despite drinking the most. Because I'm not a little bitch.
Anyway, it was a great time and Canes fans were really cool to us. Would love to do it again, though the goal is to go to Philly in February (I'm guessing the reception won't be as warm).
