Gun Cleaning: Tips, Procedure, Products and Supplies

What products do you use for cleaning, maintaining and conditioning your guns?


I like GUNSLICK PRO Foaming Bore Cleaner, Birchwood Casey Synthetic Gun Oil for all moving parts, Birchwood Casey Barricade for all exposed metals, Pro Gold Lubricant (thats the Syringe in the picture below) its a grease that makes all moving parts super slick, I put it on all major contact points, actions and bolts. For protecting wood I have yet to find anything better than Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil, that stuff is absolutely fantastic. Add a couple of brushes (copper and nylon), pipe cleaners, q-tips, a dedicated rag for oil wipe down, a dedicated rag for wood oil a good cleaning pad (the camouflage in the picture is actually a drymate gun cleaning pad) and a gunsmithing tool set (I got mine at walmart for less than $10), do not use regular screwdrivers.

I don't use Hoppes but that stuff has been around for a long time. If it didn't work it would be out of business by now.

I use a lot of these types of products because I'm lazy and have developed a real hate for cleaning weapons since being in the service. I have a couple of .17HM2 that I use a carbon fiber rod with bore brushes and jags due to being freaky about accuracy and damaging the bore.

Foaming gun cleaner is a must. Amazing how well that stuff works.

I use a synthetic oil a good friend who works for CAT gets me. The name escapes me but it is really good.

I've heard that's some good stuff. I've got some of that Strike Hold shit on the way, if I don't like it I'm definitely gonna try the Frog Lube.

Got the Strike Hold in today an I think I'm gonna like it, it was very quick and easy and appears to have did a really good job cleaning and lubing. Curious to see how it holds up in the long run.

Bore snakes are a must in my range bag along with CLP, Wipe out foam bore cleaner and at least one Hoppes elite cleaning rod I always keep in my truck with a jag and a few patches.

Home, I've got Hoppes elite cleaning rods, nylon brushes, mops and jags. Sage brush cleaning patches, Hoppes brushes, Hoppes #9 powder solvent, Butches Bore shine, Wipe out foam bore cleaner, G96 gun oil, Break Free CLP, Flitz polish, Bore scrubber, Birchwood Caseys gun stock wax, Hornady canned air, High Temprature Break grease, Pipe cleaners, Wheeler guns smith screw driver set, hammer and punches, stainless steel dental picks, Grace screw driver set and one standard and one phillips 15" screw drivers to remove gun stocks.
