Mariners' Catie Griggs resigns as president of business operations

  • Associated Press
Jul 5, 2024, 03:21 PM ET

SEATTLE -- Catie Griggs has resigned as president of business operations for the Seattle Mariners, the team announced Friday.
Griggs arrived in Seattle in the summer of 2021 after four seasons as the chief business officer for Atlanta United in MLS. She oversaw all aspects of the Mariners organization outside of baseball operations. At the time of her hiring, the team said Griggs was the only woman to hold a president title with a club in the majors.

The Mariners said Griggs was taking a new position on the East Coast to be closer to family.
"In talking with her as she grappled with this decision to return to the East Coast it was clear how much she valued the people that make our organization and team special," Mariners chairman John Stanton said in a statement. "But finding an opportunity for Catie and her husband, Justin, to be closer to their extended family was too important to pass up. I know this was a difficult decision for Catie, and I appreciate her professionalism in working with me as she worked through this process."
Stanton will assume Griggs' responsibilities on a interim basis until a new person is hired for the position. Griggs' tenure in Seattle included hosting major events like the 2023 All-Star Game and the 2024 NHL Winter Classic, as well as the Mariners making the postseason in 2022, ending a 21-year playoff drought.
Griggs was hired as the replacement for Kevin Mather, who resigned in February 2021 after video surfaced of him making derogatory remarks about some players and club operations.

I just find the timing odd. They are playing it off like she wanted to be near family, but family was there in the offseason and will be there in the upcoming offseason too. Who leaves in the middle of the season?

Since its extended family possibly there is some health issue that they don’t want to disclose. Timing is weird, seems weird they knew she was debating it and didn’t have an in house person ready step in besides Stanton. It is weird that she is leaving in the middle of the biggest thing facing the financial side of the organization which is television revenue.

And kind of funny in the statement of how much money she brought in with the AS game and Winter classic pointing out how crappy ownership is for not spending some of that money

Could be, but timing is odd.

Having Stanton step in is almost as weird as her timing. Not many bosses take a hands in role in a particular job. I mean having Jerry fill in makes more sense than Stanton at least to me or if she had a VP to fill in. I don't know and not even sure why I care. They screw up everything they touch and I already know that.

Team is imploding, FO getting hammered by fans and I'm sure the club house isn't in good spirits. Unless there's something else we're not being told, jump ship before the axes start dropping.

Something still seems fishy. Is there any type of tampering with front office people? Seems way to weird to step away from one job to take the same job within a week

Our FO has to be beyond toxic for her to take another job but as a lateral move.

Orioles fan here, looks like she handled just business department stuff, and Dipoto and her were separate entities? Hoping that is the case here in Baltimore, which had former majority partner John Angelos running the business side until the sale, and Mike Elias running baseball operations. Anyone could do that job better than John, but I am encouraged by the knowledge of getting the ASG and Winter Classic. I’d love to see Baltimore hosting those events, especially as a season ticket holder and being able to attend.

She only really worked on financial stuff. She also allegedly was the driver of the discounts of food and drinks at the ball park.

I’ll sign up for that. We’ve been slowly creeping up in prices here, which has been strange since we were very affordable pre-Covid.

Sounds good on the business side, thanks for the feedback from yall.
