This Week

4th seed - QB Joe Montana vs 11th seed - QB Sammy Baugh
5th seed - RB Walter Payton vs 12th seed - DT Joe Greene

Seeds are based on a ranking from NFL.com. I did not include the two offensive linemen that are in the top 24.

This will be double elimination. Allowed to change votes until deadline. Higher seed advances in case of a tie.

Pretty unlikely that anyone on the board ever saw Sammy Baugh play, since he played from 1937-52, back in the days of no face masks and leather helmets.

Saw a piece on TV about him and he was a pretty special athlete, playing football, basketball, and baseball in college and then playing QB, safety, and punter as a pro.

I actually would have picked Baugh over Reggie White and may have over Unitas. I would think about him vs LT. I would vote for the others in top 8 seeds over Baugh.

In my opinion you have Johnny Unitas and Peyton Manning. Then you have everyone else.

Marino > Montana

IMO, Unitas and Favre are similar. I would consider them "any era" quarterbacks. Unitas was better than Favre.

I think Marino was way under-seeded. The only other player on the bracket that did more with equal or less is Barry Sanders. But like I said with Rice, Montana took full advantage of the HOF talent around him.

I think Barry Sanders is one of the top three best who ever played the game, certainly best RB.

If you poll 1000 49ers fans, they'll vote Montana. If you poll 1000 Dolphin fans they'll vote Marino. If you poll 1000 75 year old men, they'll probably vote for Sammy Baugh. You'd have to have been born somewhere around 1940 to remember Baugh and you would have had to seen him play live or in a movie. No TV, No internet......all we have are short takes and newspapers.

Different eras, different equipment, players worked real jobs during the week, real grass, real mud, real snow. Leather helmets.........ever really seen one. In my first year of football at South Portland Junior High School in 1962 (7th grade), we had leather helmets with a single face bar. We got new plastic ones in 1963 (8th grade), but I still wore my leather one. Most important.......no HGH, no steroids, no drugs. Players drank beer and whiskey
for pain and pleasure.

These "best Ever" are nothing more than argument fodder.

I did this with my grandpa, in his 80s. He had Manning vs Sayers and Unitas vs Brown in semifinals. He actually had Tom Brady beating Baugh, and he saw Baugh play in person.

I'll take it a step further. Marino was better than all of them. Best QB ever IMO
