This Week

12th seed - DT Joe Greene vs 22nd seed - QB John Elway
13th seed - QB Sammy Baugh vs 19th seed - QB Brett Favre

Seeds are based on a ranking from NFL.com. I did not include the two offensive linemen that are in the top 24.

This will be double elimination. Allowed to change votes until deadline. Higher seed advances in case of a tie.

Who the hell is Sammy Baugh? Literally had to look him up.

Not sure why this guy is a higher seed than Favre.

Seriously?

Umm, they played in different eras, so of course just looking at the pure numbers Favre looks better.

Here's a better compairson (league leaders)

Years - Baugh 16, Favre 20
Completions - Baugh 5, Favre 2
Attempts - Baugh 4, Favre 3
Comp % - Baugh 9, Favre 1
Yards - Baugh 4, Favre 2
YPA - Baugh 3, Favre 0
TDs - Baugh 2, Favre 4
TD % - Baugh 2, Favre 4
INTs - Baugh 3, Favre 3
INT % - Baugh 6, Favre 1
Rating - Baugh 4, Favre 0

Sammy Baugh was one of the most dominate QBs in NFL history. His 109.9 Rating in 1945 was only surpassed once before rule changes were implemented to make passing easier (Milt Plum 110.4; 1960). People don't remember Slinging Sammy as well as they should, but he and Otto Graham were the gold standard for QB in the NFL from the late '30s to the mid '50s.

The dude threw more INTs than TDs... Sorry but he's not better than Favre. Plus if he wears a helmet that looks like this and played before color television in a 99% Caucasian league I'm not voting for him.

You really need to google wiki. The dude was awesome in so many ways. Screw the gunslinger who played for such a long time that he now has records. In his Era Favre was Good, Baugh was head and shoulders above others in his Era and he wasn't just a QB, he played other positions and played them well. It took RW to beat his rookie record in the playoffs. No contest here Baughs the man.

Burt Favre was a selfish asshole on the field.

Ummm, so was Jerry Rice, Jim Brown, Lawrence Taylor, Dick Butkus, Joe Greene, etc.

Oh yeah. So was Sammy Baugh. What does that have to do with it?

I suppose that opinion has nothing to do with Favre's career 25-9 record against the Lions.
Prolly would have been 30-4 if he didn't just chuck it up there whenever he felt like it. (Only saw them face off once in person(Favre versus the Lions that is,) Lions won.)

Selfish play hurts more than it helps.

Sammy threw a fraction of the interceptions of what the average QB of his era threw (and his 1.09 INT/TD ratio was significantly lower than the league's 1.74). Favre is one of only 2 quarterbacks in NFL history to be a starter for 10 years and throw at least the same number of INTs as the league average when he played (only Eli is worse). So bringing up interceptions is a little too much. Even his career 6.8 INT % is well below the 8.8 that was the norm for his era.

Sammy completed 56.5 % of his passes, which is so much more impressive when reminded that the rest of the league completed just 44% of all pass attempts. Also, he played in 165 of a possible 179 career games (92 %) which was just as impressive (or more considering the old protective gear and horrible health care of the time) as Favre's 302 of 320 games (94 %).

So, to adjust Sammy's stats to reflect Favre's time, his numbers would look like this (Favre's actual numbers below):

5735-7795 73.6% 57680 369-193 99.7 Rating
6300-10169 62.0% 71838 508-336 86.0 Rating

Remember, Baugh's receivers didn't have the rule protections Favre's did. Favre played a long time, Baugh revolutionized the position.
