Veteran S Burnett wants release from Steelers

By now everyone knows that Burnett was brought in to be the starting SS and I kinda felt they would work Edmunds in to be that 3rd Safety on the field in lieu of a Mack LB (which PIT doesn't really have).

Well...he was injured (what else is new) and Edmunds became the starter and the roles were reversed...When Burnett was fully healthy, he could not beat the rookie out. Noted to be an "in the box S" that can cover TEs/RBs.

Results?

To be fair, it was a mixed bag, he did have a few passes defended, maybe 1 splash play, but there were times when he looked overmatched in coverage. I would think he would've struggled to make this team if PIT can land a legit 3 down LB from this draft...imo not worth the cap hit.

If there's no trade interest...I would grant him his release.

Thought?

Bye Felecia.

Pretty funny that nobody mentions anything about being outplayed by a rookie and claiming it has everything to do with playing out of position. Which is funny given that he played that same position in GB numerous times. Guess he's trying to re-brand himself?

IMO the only good thing he really brought to the defense (when he was healthy) was a sure-tackler. His coverage skills weren't as good as advertised. As far as DB personnel, he should be easily replaceable with a far cheaper option. Hell, they already have that with Jordan Dangerfield. But finding the dime-backer/mack LB will be the bigger test, and the most necessary acquisition of the offseason.

I would have been in support of axing him this offseason even prior to his request for release. The market for FA safeties was garbage last season and doesn't look like it will get any better. He's injury prone and has sub-par coverage skills... Good luck finding the level of pay that he would have received if he stayed. But then again Mike Mitchell somehow got a call this season.

When I think of his coverage skills... I will only remember seeing this:

Or many of those inside slant routes when he was trying to cover Jared Cook on that same day lol.

Side note... Think I read somewhere that Morgan Burnett told NFL Network a week or so ago that he thought Ben was the problem and not AB.

I think Joey Porter was in that camp as well...behind the scenes. Ben has some ownership in this which is why he was trying to back pedal...he has no problem with AB etc. Basically calling out his WR1 in embarrassing fashion from what I'm hearing....maybe not intended that way, but that's how AB took it and away we go.

Still there were much better ways for AB to respond.

I don't want to say it was a total waste, but Burnett getting out of the blocks in week 5 or 6, whatever it was, put him behind the 8 ball, and just never showed enough to take the SS job.

3 Safety sub pkg...meh, it was okay...Get back to basics, PIT needs a 3 down LB that can cover...even though they lost and he gave up some plays, but he was all over the field with 14 tackles...watching Leonard last week for IND, still burns a little.

Unless something drastic happens, they're not going to get Devin White, but Mack Wilson (is this kid born to play the mack position or what...lol) can play too...The MICH kid Devin Bush a lot of people like as well...a bit small for me...but at 20 and at least 2 ILBs with 1st rd grades...THIS HAS to be the offseason to fix the mack LB spot.

I think this just sorta illustrates the downside to free agency. Success in one system/place doesn't always translate to another place. And moving requires a lot of adjustment. You win some and you lose some.... But as said above, safeties aren't valued on the market at all, so it's not clear what he thinks is going to happen if he gets released.
