I had to relearn that same thing. When I keep my left arm straight it feels like my back swing is too short. But when I see it on video, my hands get a lot higher than it feels with proper shoulder and hip turn.
It’s also easier to maintain posture and keep my right elbow close to my body with my left arm straight, thus eliminating shanks.
I don't think that I was bending it that much before. But focusing on keeping my elbow locked really seems to have improved both distance and accuracy.
