Didn't the Preds find Suter and Weber in the same draft?

Believe they took Suter top-10 and then Weber early in the 2nd.

That's scary.

Edit: yup, 2003. Suter 7th overall and Weber 49th. I knew it. Crazy.

I love to look at the drafts of years past and try to figure out what teams were thinking.

Looking at Montreal 2007, 2 slots ahead of McDonagh the Panthers took Keaton Ellerby. Two slots ahead of Patches, Pens took Angelo Esposito. And two slots ahead of PK, Philly took Kevin Marshall.

You always hear the adage "you take the best player available", but you gotta wonder how the ratings worked out that three different teams completely whiffed before the Habs knocked 'em out the park. And every draft year there is a similar story.

Hell the Jackets took Gilbert Brule 5 spots ahead of Anze Kopitar in 05. :L

I was reading an article the other day how the Penguins took him because he was a name and they wanted to eventually use him as trade bait, which they did for Marian Hossa

Me too. I do it all the time. Love looking at the Rangers pass on guys, for scrubs like Brendl, Jessiman, Korpikoski, pisses me off, we're terrible at drafting in round 1.

2003, the Blues and Kings both passed on Perry for Boyle and can't even think of the guys name on the Blues that they took.

This also coming from the team that took Bobby Sanguinetti 1 PICK before Giroux, because the Flyers ''liked'' Sanguinetti so we wanted to basically block them of getting him. Look how that worked out :L

Michael Del Zotto 2 picks before John Carlson. List goes on and on for the Rangers.

Jessiman really has to hurt - although, he did play a game or two a couple of years ago for the Perds I think. I think he was the last of the 03 first round to crack the NHL.

He was actually projected to go #1 in that draft at one point. He had fallen somewhat by the time the final rankings had come out but was still top 10ish. I remember it being quite a story that he fell as far as he did in that draft and that the Pens might have gotten steal picking him at #20.

Much was also made of the fact that Alexei Cherepanov had also fallen quite a bit in that same draft, but at least he had the whole Russia/KHL excuse for teams being a bit cautious about taking him. It was unfortunate how that turned out. :(

Think it was Florida actually, could be wrong though.

That did hurt, one pick before Dustin Brown and another solid NHL player. Can't think off the top of my head.

Al Montoya was another shit 1st round pick.

Outside of Kreider, Staal, in the last 10 years, we suck at 1st round picks.

The Jessiman mistake was an obvious one that lots of teams still make to this day. He was a prematurely physically mature kid who was beating up on smaller, inferior opposition. As you age and move up levels that physical advantage lessens or disappears entirely, and you have to have something else to back it up.

Wasn't there someone on this board that suggested that the Red Wings haven't been a drafting powerhouse for a while and got laughed at? Who was that guy?

Part of it is that they take a while to develop, so you're not going to see as many guys make the jump immediately, and some of those guys just came into the league last year or this year so they haven't been around that long - but I agree that they could be a little better

One of the interesting things about that list is Nashville being 7th - for a team that has trouble scoring goals, they've had a lot of drafted and developed players come up and make contributions

If I recall correctly he was one sexy mother fucker. And I'm not sure he used the term 'power house' but I'm not certain because I... I mean 'he' often posts inebriated.

/posters from the swamp days should get this reference.

That's the ONLY way Nashville survives. They need to draft/develop or they'd never have success.

I'd have to pull up the thread but if I'm remembering correctly, when you asked me who I thought drafted well if not the Red Wings I said L.A., Montreal, and then I think the third team I mentioned was either San Jose or Chicago. So if I'm remembering that correctly then from this simple analysis it looks like I didn't guess too badly off the top of my head (the Kings and Montreal look even better if one considers that their best drafted players are defensemen, who are generally going to score fewer goals than forwards).

OK, so I found it and of course I've remembered wrong

http://www.sportshoopla.com/forums/4825336-post960.html

I did name Montreal and San Jose but didn't mention L.A. I found this kind of shocking, as I definitely remember thinking of L.A. first when you asked me the question. I guess sometimes when you get typing longer bullshit thoughts come and go, and by the time you realize you forgot something the edit option is already gone.

Harvard_Oiler who predicted the Oilers would score 410 goals (I think it was for the 2007-08 season). They scored 195 goals that season.
Cool, I don't have to ask and embarrass myself by admitting that I just couldn't remember what the 410 reference was about.

My integrity has been saved.

I don't know what was more pathetic about that guy, the back-pedalling from that prediction or his trashing of Canadian universities as joke institutions.
