I don't see this being #2. If were trading Pence and selling, why would we bring someone in, and not give some of our kids a shot? Doesn't make sense IMO.

Because we aren't going total teardown, we just aren't going to give up any assets to improve the team for this year. They will have to play better on their own. We can bring in guys that cost basically zero like Francouer, see if that helps at all, but we aren't going to give up a decent prospect.

I agree with this but I also think that before July plays out we may have an idea of what management's intentions are. Both Pence and Lincecum are FAs as we enter 2014. If we have no intentions of signing either of them (I think we chase Pence but not Timmy) do they try and trade for a prospect? We gave up Wheeler for a few months of Beltran. What would Timmy or Hunter bring if we did in fact think that 2013 had slipped away? I just don't know where that 'point of no return' is. I just can't see us letting that walk with nothing in return or at least a real effort to re-sign them.

Well said. In fact, I am starting to think that it is a good idea for teams to somewhat overpay to keep their stars. I say and think that, as the alternative is flat losing the guy for nothing, like the poster above illustrates. That is the bad. The good, is that you would also then have $$ on the table that you did not spend to keep your current star.

That is where the overpay makes sense to me a bit. In that, it seems both easier and less disruptive to a team to keep a core of talent together, and win & lose with them, as opposed to overhauling your lineup with new and different folks every few years.

This, and the marketing. It cannot be understated how much money Tim Lincecum, Pablo Sandoval and Brian Wilson brought/have brought/will bring to this ball club. Without that money, maybe the team isn't buyers as often at the deadline, and the Bay Area adores its sports stars (not that other locales don't, but we've said it plenty, "There are few places [fill in the blank] would be more popular than The City."). They certainly wouldn't be talking to the Marlins about any players this season without the coin from three good to perfect seasons. All of these discussions come down to one fact: Even during an especially long mid-season slump, this franchise is built quite well. They won't spend a quarter of a billion dollars, but luckily, that isn't necessary for success.

And I agree. That said, I don't think the Dodgers are fixing their problems the wrong way. I think the Dodger situation got so bad, and fan interest was waning so bad, that they had to make the big splash they did. In fact, I think they need to continue doing this for the short term. If they can and do, they will have the nice core of young players that teams can work and tinker around, and then not have to break the bank to fix the teams problems.

I agree. I'll make fun of you for it whenever I can, but I completely understand it. It's pretty silly to get all worked up about how rich people spend their money. :) Most of them spend it on far more sinister stuff than saving a horrible franchise. ;)

The annual "lightning in a bottle" Sabean move.

If he was throwing in the towel and trading Pence, Id think he would want to give some minor league guys a chance at PT

Many of us Atheltics fans are fond of him, glad he landed in the bay area and wish him success with your club.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsvhZlp3A9A]3rd Annual Bacon Friday 2013: A message from Jeff Francoeur - YouTube[/ame]

Francoeur, an outfielder for the Kansas City Royals, had 20 pizzas delivered Wednesday afternoon to fans sitting in the right-field grandstand at the Oakland Coliseum. He also sent along a signed bat, with a personal message inscribed. That's quite a gift package. To what did the Oakland folks owe such generosity? Why in the name of another Jeff — Spicoli — would he buy them pizzas?

The unorthodox acquaintance of a visiting slugger and some East Bay baseball crazies began a season ago when a group in the bleachers decided to celebrate "Bacon Tuesday" by bringing homemade bacon-flavored eats to the ballpark. With the Royals in town, fans also made Francoeur the target of good-natured heckling (being the right fielder, he was closest to them). Inevitably, the memes collided. Francoeur got along so well with the crowd — he would wave, shout back at them, and laugh along — that after the game he went over for a meet and greet.

More here.

It seems to me Sabes isn't doing a towel throw teardown, he's just going to make small moves like this one, giving up no prospects of note, and let these guys sink or swim on their own. If they go on a huge run the next 3 weeks maybe he'll actually part with something. But if they don't, and let's face it, it's unlikely, then he will make any 'selling' moves closer to the deadline (like maybe dealing Pence).

Remember, he can trade Pence and still re-sign him.

Tanaka will make MLB Debut #5 for the defending Champs.

Not like the 14(??) we had in '08, but still a high number.

As much as I hate your city for pretty much beating my sports teams in big games the last few years...I hope Jeff does well. He's a great guy to be around from what I've heard.

If he hits 230 I'd be happy if I was a fan just because of the positive atmosphere he brings in the clubhouse and to the fans

I think it is safe to say that everyone here feels bad for you guys after what happened in '10. Not that we would change any of it, of course, but we do understand that there was a flip side to that coin.

However, maybe it was just a small bit of revenge for 1993.

About Frenchy, I have heard a lot that he is a GREAT clubhouse guy. We have the talent, they just aren't producing. If he can hit .150, but wake everyone else up, I am VERY OK with the pickup.

When Jeff Francouer started his career he was knocking the cover off the ball. With the right coaching he could get back on track. He was one Braves prospect that I was sorry to see go even though his numbers were way down.
