Shutout for Howard!

Ever since the first game, I've not said "shutout"....and ever since then our goaltenders have gotten them. :D

Not much of a game. Vancouver was clearly gassed from playing yesterday.

Ok, I'm off to bed. No tigers or Wings tomorrow, the mental break will be good for me. Plus I haven't had a chance to watch Dexter from last Sunday, so that'll be on top of my to do list tomorrow after work..

Night folks. Have a good one.

Even though the Tigers are on the brink of elimination, Detroit fans have really been spoiled rotten by seeing some great baseball, football and now hockey games these last few weeks. It's been intense.

another canuck loss coming up. canucks will start really slow tonight and fall behind by 2 or 3 goals. then push at the end to lose in a shootout or by 1 goal in regulation. I am mildly intrigued by this game tonight. can someone wake me for April thanks

good call there.

some close ones, but the wings pull it out now with 2 shutouts in the 1st 3.

babcock must have really torn them new bungholes after that 3 goal in the 3rd meltdown on opening night. they haven't given up a goal since.

speaking of awesome performances, i found a sega genesis simulator, downloaded an nhl 95 rom, and created the 2002 red wings team. 17-2 so far, averaging 6gpg, and have had at least 3 games with yzerman getting 5 goals. yay.

Sorry team. My fault they lost.
they were holding in there until I went out for dinner.

had a feeling it was one of those games where they needed to cash in a chance or two early.
combine Canucks playing in Philly last night, with Detroit having most of a week off, and the NEEDED to play with the lead to have any chance.
Just 5 shots for Canucks in 3rd, while trailing. ugh. just 13 shots in the last 40 minutes. double ugh.
We've had two early measuring stick games, and failed them both.

too bad for CoHo at the end of the 2nd.

also, I'm getting REALLY fucking tired of hipchecks being called penalties just for being hipchecks. It's a LEGAL move. how fucking tough is that to understand?

maybe there's something to this hangover thing

Meanwhile, 2011 Cup finalists Boston/Vancouver have combined for only 2 wins in 8 games.

this is downright goofy ... i thought Coho was the most inspired Canuck last night but AV doesnt throw him a bone ???

DETROIT — Cody Hodgson was calling for the puck as he charged over the blueline in the final seconds of the second period.

His teammates were yelling, "Shoot!"

He did. It was a helluva shot, too. One that looked like it could have gone clean through Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard's shoulder. Instead, it ricocheted into the air. There it drifted, agonizingly, before landing behind Howard and in the net. For a split second it looked like the Canucks had cut Detroit's lead to 2-1. It looked like the potential game changer the Canucks had been flailing away for. But it went in a split second after the period had ended.

Don't let that take away from the effort, or Hodson's game. Thursday was baptism time for the 21-year-old. Having pulled the rip cord on patience, head Alain Vigneault iced a lineup that left Hodgson's line with immense responsibility both offensively and defensively. This was Detroit, and Hodgson was going to be pitted against the riveting Pavel Datsyuk and the unrelenting Henrik Zetterberg.

"I loved it, I loved playing against those guys," Hodgson said. "Obviously, you have to be aware of where they are at all times. And even when you're with them, you have to make sure you can check them. Because you can be running right beside them and they'll still be making plays.

"I thought we did pretty well against them."

He's right. Hodgson may not have scored, but he more than held his own. He showed some slick moves when he was controlling the puck in the offensive zone and with them forced Johan Franzen to take a first period penalty.

He developed quick chemistry with both linemates, Jannik Hansen and Chris Higgins. But especially Higgins. It was not an easy task for these three players. The Canucks had their usual first line with the Sedins, but after Hodgson and his Triple H line, the Canucks had two centres, Max Lapierre and Andrew Ebbett, who were essentially quarterbacking fourth lines for the team.

It left pressure on Hodgson to produce. More importantly, he couldn't get beat.

You could possibly argue he did on the Wings first goal, as Justin Abdelkader went by him and scored. Maybe that's why Vigneault wasn't overly enthused with Hodgson's performance at the end of the game.

"I mean, he's doing some things out there we like as far as things he does with the puck," Vigneault said. "There are certain areas he needs to get better at and we've discussed it with him."
But while Vigneualt nitpicks at Hodgson's defensive awareness, the rookie continues to make play after play. The more he makes, the hungrier he seems to get. He is playing with a little simmering fire right now.

He set Higgins up on on a gutsy and smooth seam pass which floated like a frisbee. Higgins was able to knock it out of the air and nearly went in all alone. On another play, he set up Dale Weise as the Canucks were in the midst of a line change.

"He just got a piece of it, but it was a good try," Hodgson said. "We were all over them. We had lots of chances. We just have to find ways to put the puck in the net.

"It's been going well, but we just need to put the puck in the net.

"I thought we played well as a line. I thought we had a lot of chemistry and a lot of chances. We generated quite a few offensive chances. But it would have been nice to bury a few.

"That's the bottom line. We didn't score any goals."

Hodgson said he thought he had scored at the end of the second with that big slap shot.

"It would have been a big momentum swing there, that's for sure," he said. "But you can't argue with the score clock. Higgins made a great pass to me and I tried to get in on net before time ran out."
