Alexei Yegorov, was killed in a car crash back in 99 or 98. He never played a whole season with SJ, but the year he would have been given a roster spot he passed away.

Really? Didnt know that so I looked into it... doesnt seem according to this SJ planned on giving him a roster spot since he played overseasons for 3 seasons after his last game with SJ:

1995-96 San Jose Sharks NHL 9 3 2 5 2 -5 -- -- -- -- --
1995-96 Kansas City Blades IHL 65 31 25 56 84 8 5 2 0 2 8
1996-97 San Jose Sharks NHL 2 0 1 1 0 1 -- -- -- -- --
1996-97 Kentucky Thoroughblades AHL 75 26 32 58 59 -14 4 0 1 1 2
1997-98 Kentucky Thoroughblades AHL 79 32 52 84 56 2 3 2 0 2 0
1998-99 Yaroslavl Torpedo Russia 13 3 1 4 8 -- -- -- -- --
1998-99 Moscow Dynamo Russia 11 0 0 0 0 -- -- -- -- --
1998-99 St. Petersburg SKA Russia 25 8 8 16 30 -- -- -- -- --
1998-99 St. Petersburg SKA Rus-1 19 4 8 12 18 -5
1999-00 Long Beach Ice Dogs IHL 20 4 9 13 8 9 6 1 0 1 2
1999-00 Adirondack IceHawks UHL 41 16 26 42 35 -4 -- -- -- -- --
2000-01 Schwenningen Wild Wings DEL 55 6 16 22 24 -17 -- -- -- -- --

From a russian article:
"He wanted to play only in Russia. Overseas, he had a
lot of problems with the coaches. San Jose was coached
by Kevin Constantine who didn’t like Europeans,
especially Russian players. Alexey had to play for a
farm club for 3 years and most of the time didn't have
a chance to play for the Sharks. Although in his first
season, he has received the best IHL rookie award,
and then played in the All Stars games twice. When
Alexey got a chance in the NHL, he played an excellent
game on the line with such stars as Igor Larionov,
Sergey Makarov and Sandis Ozolins. He made an assist
in the first game and scored a hat-trick in the second
one. However, Constantine sent him back to the minors."

Also on his death -- This is fucked up. it was heroine related & he jumped out a window:
""The last months of his life were hell. It was
impossible to fight the drugs. Besides, everybody
turned away from Alexey", says Nikolay Yegorov.

When the money were gone, Yegorov began to borrow
money to buy drugs. Once he gave his passport to get
the drugs money. When it was a time to pay back, he
came to see Nikolay.

"At that time, Alexey was clean for a month or so but
I was afraid that if I give him the money to get his
passport back, he’ll go and buy more heroine. He
started to yell why nobody trusted him. Then I offered
to go with him to get his passporst but he said no."

Alexey Yegorov decided to force the drug dealers to
give him his passport back and went to their place on
the General Simonyan Street. However, he was
outpowered by four people. They beat him severely and
then he was thrown down the stairs from the 7th to the
3rd floor. Alexey couldn’t sustain the pain and jumped
out of the window. The bustards threw his passport out
of the window and it fell on the dead body of Alexey.
It happened on March, 2, 2002.

Yegorov was buried on the Southern Cemetery in Saint
Petersburg on March 8, 2002. There were very few
hockey people at the funeral. Yegorov’s family members
did not want to listen to hypocritical words of those
who has turned away from Alexey when he was in a
trouble.

The best that's left after the player is his 10-year
old son. Nikita dreams about becoming a hockey player,
and Sokolov thinks that he shows a promise."

Heres the whole translated article:
Yahoo! Groups

Its quite a fucked up read... Had no idea of any of this. He got beat up by his drug dealers trying to get his passport back, thrown down 4 flights of stairs, then jumped out a window... Man, your statment of dying in a car accident sounds like such a better death then this...

Very sad, but I think his death is a mystery. I do remember something about the Russian Mafia having to be connected to his death in some way. I can't remember if I read it or heard it on tv, but its just sad. Those 95 -97 shark teams were bad, and I know Constantine was fired so I'm sure Alexei would have been given a chance on the Sharks. But if he had issues with the coaches then I guess I could understand why he never got called up again.

"Anybody else remember those sad seasons after Contantine was fired?" Didn't the Sharks change coaches 3x, until D. Sutter was hired?

I think it was just Wiley and Sims but I could be forgetting someone. 95-97 were definately not good years for the Sharks.

I always wondered why him & alexei yegorov didnt get more of a chance with SJ but ville peltenon did?

back then it was before I could steam games, so maybe he just sucked and had good numbers? I donno, always thought SJ kinda wasted his talent like my homeboy Korolyuk

Caloun scored goals on the first four shots of his NHL career with the Sharks in March 1996, including 2 goals in a blowout win the Sharks' final game at the old Winnipeg Arena, one of the very few highlights that season.

Answers for April/May/June, 1999 (see #15)

Very sad story about Yegorov, no one should have to go through that.

Constantine was fired late in 1995, and Wiley took over for the rest of '95-'96. Sims was hired after that but was fired after the '96-'97 season. Sutter was hired before '97-'98.

Funny, I remember Iginla trying to rough up Korolyuk in the 2004 WCF. Calgary seemed to be really annoyed with him in that playoff series. Ron Wilson was the first one who actually gave him a real chance to play. Sutter didn't seem to thrilled with him.

Guy coulda been a major stud IMO, prob not with SJ tho, since they cant develope talent worth shit. They can do the all around decent player type like Clowe & Pavs, but them fancy scorer types just die in San Jose...

Jus curious, how often do teams actually change their (not even sure what they are called) developement type guys? I know teams have goalie coaches, but whos in charge of working with the young guys?

No that was Andrei Zuyzin that was caught up with the mob, the sharks were "very worried" for him after he held out for more money

How long has he been doing it? if its been for awhile, can they fire him please? I know a lotta teams have guys that never develope into what they were predicted to be, but it just seems like San Jose has a large history of that...

Korolyuk's an interesting character. His rights were traded to NJ in Oct. 2006, and then the Sharks re-acquired him in Feb. 2007 based on his request. The trade was voided because he did not report for his physical.

And he didnt really want to come back to the NHL he "Sasha" always stated after he left he wanted to play at home in russia and the KHL gave him more money.

Even when the sharks reacquirred his rights he was having serious back and ankle problems and probably wouldnt have passed

That line of Korky-McCauley-Ekman was really good that season.

Yea, back then the sharks were really good with aquiring guys & getting above avg production out of them --- then getting rid of em... I never expected Mccauley or Ekman to play as good as they did.

Another guy they did that with back in the day was Todd Elik, I loved that guy jus cause when I was little I always thought he was funny lookin cause his helmet always seemed to sit really high on his head & he was on a dif team every year. Sharks got him, I was happy, he did well, then they traded him for fuckin Kevin Miller...
