Four divisions (West, Midwest, East, and South) - Two divisions have 8 teams, two divisions have 7 teams. Top four teams in each division make the playoffs.

Really? They are talking about having different numbers of teams in the division and splitting up the playoff spots despite this. That seems insane to me. If they did division winners as top 2 seeds and next 6 highest it would make more sense.

Teams in a 7-team division would have a 57% chance at the playoffs.
Teams in a 8-team division would have a 50% chance.

That just seems unfair.

This is a seriously idiotic proposal. Why the hell would you want to unbalance the divisions? What is wrong with the current system? I know the Wings and Jackets want to be in the East, but last I checked, Detroit's made the playoffs for the last 98 consecutive years, so they don't really have any place to complain.

The only reason - THE ONLY REASON - to do this would be because you expect an additional two teams to enter (or leave) the league in the next few years. And even if that were the case, there's no reason to make this type of call now - you change it up when those teams are actually in the league.
