When a team is as top heavy as the Sharks, you need skill, will and intangibles. These two only have skill.

Correction - they both have skill but only Joe shows it consistently. Patty has gone AWOL again with his skill.

lol, getting a couple of meaningless assists in garbage time now qualifies as showing skill (especially after his dumb dumb penalty to seal any chance at a comeback) consistently? He (Thornton) has 1 meaningful point in 3 games (in fairness, Marleau and Pavelski are being assist killers right now). His only real assist that actually meant something during the game was the one to Burns and Thornton was lucky as fuck that the defender didn't catch the puck with his glove and even after that, Burns did all the heavy lifting with a great quick move to his backhand.

Don't get me wrong, Joe has been >>>>> Patty, but they both suck when the tension ratchets up. When the playoffs start, Thornton basically turns into a $7M 3rd line center defensive specialist. Patty turns into an AHLer.

At this point, Doug can force Patty out and risk being a dick GM to players around the league, or keep ramming his head into the wall by fielding the same roster expecting different results. I'm sick of Patty's act. His game will deteriorate faster than Joe's since Patty's game is somewhat dependent on speed whereas Joe's is on size. I hate NTCs.

patty has been a shark for 15 years. DW has spent a whole lot of time and effort making SJ a place guys want to play by being loyal and fair, espescially to veterans who he feels have earned that respect. patty is the rime example of that loyalty and dougie isnt going to move him or jumbo no matter what. boyle as well will remain, though he has been the arguably the best Dman they have so I dont know if dealing him would be good anyways despite his age.

Simply put, the sharks just dont have a toews, crosby, chara type player. They just dont have it, so they have to win by committee and with strong attention to detail and excellent coaching. Right now, they have terrible coaching, particularly on the PK, absolutely zero scoring depth on the bottom 2 lines, and some pretty weak links on D.

As much as I hate the annual disappearance of patty and joe, good teams get scoring from more than 2 lines, and its the sharks bottom 6 that remains the problem. they have 1 goal (desi), but have taken a whopping 7 minor penalties (that arent offsetting, though 8 if you include mitchell's dumb penalty on jackman that negated a would-be PP). that means the bottom 6 forwards have accounted for 7 of 12 penalties against the sharks. Given that the Blues have scored 5 PP goals, 3 of which were on those penalties, and the fact that one of the blues goals came against the 3rd line, the bottom 6 is the equivalent of -3 thus far. Once again, they consistently undermine the team, and while everyone continues to focus on line 1's inability to score, which obviously really does hurt, the bottom 6 is hurting equally or even more. With a reasonable 3rd line, a whole lot of things would look very different and we wouldn't have nearly the pressure on 1 or 2 guys to carry the whole team, which they clearly cannot do.

On the Patty wagon, just do what was done to Heatler. Stick his ass on the 3rd line & move someone up who is showing that want to be there.

Patty has been invisible this series, but he's had some good playoff series too....
He was in the top 3 in goals, along with Iginla and Lecavalier, over like the past 10 years in the playoffs. Pretty sure that was mentioned last year.
Pavelski has had a bunch of prime chances. He scores on a couple of those, and we are looking at a different series.
Their PK amazes me with how pathetic it is. Just sit back, don't pressure at all, and wait for the other team to score. It was like this a few seasons ago too, maybe when the Ducks bounced them.
Well I fooled myself into believing they had a chance to win this series. But the Blues have now beat them 6 out of 7 games this season, and I don't see any way the Sharks can win 3 out of the next 4.
They just have too many players on this team who aren't good: Moore-Mitchell-Galiardi-Demers-Handzus-etc. You can't win with too many of those type of players in your lineup.

Excellently put... and it appears that year after year we can never get 100% effort from the whole team for 60 mins. There seems to always be some lines that begin to coast and in the playoffs you are only as good as your weakest link.

The inability to build a functioning line 3 or 4 and the resulting reliance on 2-3 guys to carry the team, which they cannot, is an astute critique and the crux of our issues. :amen:
