First off, this is not a thread about merely making the playoffs where of course anything can happen. This is actually a thread about visualizing what changes to our current team it'll take to win a SB. It's not been that long ago that ardent followers like we have on this board should be able to remember merely hoping for a competent team, once we got that we shifted our attention to wanting a competitive team, well now we have that. My question is why stop there? let's shoot for a consistent playoff participant, after that a perennial SB contender/winner. Beyond some luck, what's it gonna take to get us there?

1) we need to maintain stability at qb and HC . this is key . we are beginning year 3 of a 5 year rebuild as many here have forgotten

2) acknowledge what we are , a 500 football team with a lot of flaws and have patience to allow the FO time to fix them . resist the temptation to take short cuts

3) start to address more of our flaws in talent . the best way is to draft wisely and sign young FA's as needed . when a star becomes available use the resources to get him

4) get coaches that teach fundamental football . boneheaded mental mistakes kill this team and tackling is simply awful . i bet we can move up 5 places on defense by fixing that crap alone

5) look at what aaron rogers does with the clock , study it , and implement it . we waste so much time not being situationly aware

6) make sure KC and/or the new qb keeps /gets the targets he needs . reed , crowder and MKD could be good but injures could derail that train easily resign jax and PG if you can , if not then it looks like a cheaper brit and maybe a prior . cut ties with grant and draft a burner (if jax is gone )

7 ) defensively we have a huge issue , we really need to come away with at least 3 rookie starters , 1 on the d/line one in the secondary , one at ILB , that is hard because you will be asking a 3rd rounder to contribute right away . we need at least 1 starting d/lineman out of FA who is a legit starter and retaining baker . that would give us 3 starting caliber d/lineman

8) depth on defense could be an issue but in 18 we can add more

9) a game changer at RB is needed , i like CT , i like kelley but we need the bell cow to move the chains and get the TDS . we also need a LG

10) every draft we should pick a lineman on either side of the ball . drafting a qb to develop late should also be in the cards

there is my start sty

Pretty hard act to follow after Skinsdad.
Thoughts for perennial playoff/superbowl contender/winner.
Immediately I think of Seattle, Denver, New England, Cincinnati.
These teams have weaknesses but when healthy the strengths overshadow, and cover them.
Perhaps the greatest assets these teams had were multiple coaches who were truly respected and could motivate men to give their best.
Washington has the advantage of being in the NFC, where Seattle's run of fear and dominance may be over.
Other good teams, have been very unpredictable in the playoffs or have completely missed them altogether.

With that in mind
1). "improve the o-line"
Washington is a LG & C away from having something "similiar"(not nearly as good) to what the cowboys have. Cousins has had all day to throw, sometimes he needs to scramble or throw the ball away.
The upgrades would more so be beneficial for those tough 3rd and 1 or goal line runs.

2). "Switch the base defense to 4-3"
I'm shocked at how well Kerrigan has done this year statistically. I think some of that could be due to Norman causing QBs to hold the ball a little longer sometimes. Honestly he needs help on the other side, and a real NT to force the QB to head his way. It's been 3 years now, and the most crucial pieces needed for a 3-4 have not been added. Simplify to the 4-3 where the team has a history of being top 10 in certain defensive catergories.

3). "Sign Free Agents"
We have had a history of signing free-agents and then asking them to do something brand new.
If we sign a DE, we shouldn't ask him to play OLB, just sign an OLB. Also, even younger guys who never saw the field or were always injured probably shouldn't just be given the starting job. People like DeSean, and Josh
were no-brainers...we shouldn't pass on no-brainers when we have a shot to get them.

4). "Every draft pick counts"
Unless we can get Sheldon Richardson with that extra 4th, no pick should be taken for granted. Its shocking to be some of the amazing players that developed from rounds 3-4. At times the so-called experts here seem to go to sleep after the 2nd.

...To sum it up, the coaching is what matters the most. Even the players will say, practice was good or it was too lax. We were motivated, we were outcoached. Coaching matters the most, then other positional coaches need to be effective in getting players to maximizing their talent. Once we find/develop an ELITE talent on offense and defense we will be in the playoffs every year. WE are literally only 2 players away

We as a team and a fanbase have no idea how to handle the concept of competence.

There fore its about time for us to do something really stupid and get back to our normal safe place.
