Vancouver blasts NHL for lacking anti-riot strategy - The Globe and Mail

“In spite of four Stanley Cup riots in the last five years, [the NHL] has no approach, no policy and no apparent strategy to work with host franchises and municipalities on this issue,” says the lengthy internal report to be debated at a special council meeting on Tuesday.

I'm sorry, did I miss something? Ottawa, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Chicago? I don't remember any rioting at all.

I'm with ya man. Looks like they are just trying to take some steam off of themselves for failing so horribly. I dont think it is going to work. Vancouver is beaustiful, the people of Vancouver seem fucking awesome. Great culture, hockey is awesome there... But the police and mayor failed miserably.

The closest thing that I noticed in Pittsburgh was excessive partying after the win. There were a couple of idiots in the Southside (bar capital of the city), but nothing on par with Vancouver. In all, I thought that we took the loss pretty well.

Hmmm....

So we have hockey enforcers getting depressed about life after hockey...

And we have a dangerous situation during the playoffs where we need some kind of presence to quell the violence...

I think we have a win-win on our hands here!

I'm sorry, but mayor Gregor Robertson and the rest of Vancouver City Council need to take the lion's share of responsibility. You hope for the best, but you prepare for the worst and the city failed to do that. Calling in reinforcements to help Vancouver police over an hour after the riot starts shows a total lack of planning. Obviously, no lessons were learned from 1994.

Yeah, agreed. I'm not sure how the NHL is responsible more than any other large event that gathers a large crowd. The city/county/state is responsible for maintaining social order and safety, not the businesses that inhabit them. And the police are the experts on dealing with criminal behavior and mob violence, not the NHL. The city gets its share of the tax revenue generated by these events from ticket sales, restaurant patronage, etc. They should do their part to earn it.

Here's a tip for Vancouver... If you want to prevent this sort of thing in the future, it's usually best to not give people the illusion they can riot with impunity by charging almost no one despite having clear and obvious evidence from thousands of photos and videos.

this is ridiculous

note to Gregor ... you invited 155000 people down town ... youre the one who decided it was right to put up the monster tv displays ... youre the one who decided how much of the budget to hand over to the police

nice try

This is just stupid.Title should be-
NHL blasts Vancouver for lacking anti rioting strategy.
It would be fucking embarrassing as hell for the Nucks to make it to the finals, then have the league say-"We're going to put the Nucks games at a neutral site, for players safety. You,ve proven to us,you can't handle large crowds"

Disgusting attempt to avoid accountability by the city of Vancouver. Politicians are the same everywhere...they suck!

Aaron Ward with a great tweet...

Vancouver puts some blame on NHL for riots, then I blame BAUER for my lack of speed and brutal hands throughout my career

Vancouver police have completed an internal review - I bolded the incredulous portion below

VANCOUVER — An internal review by the Vancouver police says the department's response to the Stanley Cup riot was justified and insists there was no way to know trouble was brewing in the city's downtown.

The police report is the third review to be released so far, and repeats the force's claims that there was nothing it could have done to prevent the riot that followed the Vancouver Canucks' loss to the Boston Bruins June 15.

It also suggests the city should make changes when it holds large-scale public events to ensure there is a way to control who can attend or how many people can gather in one spot.

An independent review released last week painted a picture of a confused, overwhelmed police force that was slow to react as the alcohol-fuelled crowds gathered to watch the game on giant outdoor screens.

The police report says the department had absolutely no information it would be facing a potential riot once the game ended and no way for the force to know the crowds downtown would reach more than 150,000 people.

An executive summary distributed in advance of the report's release suggests that Vancouver police and other forces throughout the region need better training, should work on improving their co-ordination and should be using the same equipment.

the band of idiots working out of city hall runs deep.

communist heads are in the sand ... "give us more bike lanes, chicken coops in the back yard and wheat for the front yard" ... its what vancouver needs!!!

I almost hoped the VPD would come out and say "we (police) asked for this much money ... they (the mayor) said you can only have this much money" but I guess everyone just wants to keep their jobs

in a way, none of this surprises since the city/police didnt even move to incorporate any of the recommendations from the 1994 riot reports
