Oilers' Foster speaks about injury, hopes to get rule change

It was nearly three years ago when Kurtis Foster suffered one of the scariest injuries seen in the NHL, forcing him to miss the final eight games of the 2007-08 season and the first 50 of 2008-09.

Foster broke his left leg in several places after crashing into the boards chasing the puck for an icing call with Torrey Mitchell of the San Jose Sharks. Now recovered and playing for the Edmonton Oilers, Foster is speaking out about his gruesome injury in hopes of producing a change in the NHL rule book.

"I don't want to see somebody go through what I went through, or something even worse, for them (NHL) to change a rule that, really, we're the only league, I think, left in the world that has the rule still," Foster told TSN's Ryan Rishaug.

Interesting article. I'd hate to take the excitement of a race for the puck out of the game, and I'm against blowing it dead if the defenseman has the lead (Darren Helm don't care about no stinkin' leads!). I think the college rule works pretty well, where players race to the faceoff dot.

watch the vid on the side too Eddie ... this revelation that he almost died from the blood loss is crazy

in the vid he says that the doctors told him his femur basically exploded upon impact ... it was either that or the femur could have dislocated and come out of his hip socket and broken through the skin of his ass

Wow... that's messed up. Incredible that he's back in the league, that could not have been an easy rehab. One of these days, someone is going to go awkwardly into the boards and snap their neck. I really think it's time to change this rule before someone gets hurt, players are just too big, strong, and fast.

/usually you have to go to prison to get a bone stabbed through your ass...

that's a really good compromise. I presume players got used to listening for a whistle on close calls in an awful hurry.

I agree with this, a lot of teams have set plays where they do a hard cross-corner dump-in from their own side of centre with a teamamte skating hard trying to retrieve the puck (I think the Sedin boys pulled it off against the Stars earlier this week). I'd hate to see that play go by the wayside.

initially i thought to myself this whole fan excitement over the chase for the puck is getting overrated these days in the NHL, now that there is an average of only 6 icings per game

but its true ... the no touch would do away with that Sedin play they have used a couple of times this year where Daniel has caught the opposing d flat footed as he beelined with a full head of steam through the neutral zone after henrik zips it to the other end

so the modified version needs a look

One of the junior leagues (can't remember which) has a hybrid style where if the offensive player is obviously going to win the race and is ahead by a lot, they let it go, but if the race is close or the D is way ahead, it becomes no touch. Always thought that was interesting.

I prefer the automatic icing to the hybrid icing. Sure it takes away the play in the video, but honestly, how often do you actually see teams do that? It's not a common play. They've had automatic icing in the WHL for years now and it hasn't affected the play at all. But either way, it's time for the NHL to get rid of the touch up icing. There is zero need for it.

I really dont remember seeing the Sedins try this play anytime prior to this year ... a couple of years back they were the only ones trying the slap pass and now everyone is doing it

Good story by TSN there. Looks like a nasty surgery that Foster had.

As a 13 year old I had a teammate break his collarbone on a play that resembled all those icing hits. It was just a dump inside the red line so icing was not an issue, but late in the game with our goalie out, he and the d-Men were going hard for the puck and he got bumped awkwardly into the boards. Having two guys going hard towards pretty much a solid wall is so dangerous. In my buddy's case it was an essential part of the play, but I don't see why on a routine icing call the NHL can't legislate some of the risk out of these kinds of situations.

Too busy thinking of a way to make any contact with the head illegal even if it's clean and integral to the play, I guess.

NHL = wankers

In the race to the face off dot, what happens when the offensive player gets there first? They both keep racing? And is the winner determined by his stick or his skates?
