I'd love for the players union and MLB to adopt a rule that permits teams to do exactly this. Bring back a former player, signed to a minimum contract (depending on their tenure, of course), without impacting either the luxury tax (if any) or the roster limit. OK, within limits. If the returning player was a "star", no more than 1-2 players per season, etc. It could be called the Good Will Rule or some such. The team gets a boost, the fans are thrilled, the player gets honored, it's all good. I see no downside to this. Get 'er done, Manfred!
