Commanders vs. Panthers game info
Date: Sunday, October 20, 2024
Time: 4:05 p.m. ET
Location: NorthWest Stadium, Landover, Maryland
Broadcast: CBS With Ian Eagle, Charles Davis, Evan Washburn, and Washington Commanders Radio Broadcasting Network.
The Washington Commanders are in a position few saw coming in a league built on parity. They are the new kids on the NFL block after posting a division-leading 4-2 W/L record. Expectations have risen as the oddsmakers now see them as 7.5-point favorites against the visiting Carolina Panthers.
In the 17 games played between them, the Panthers vs. Commanders head-to-head historically are 10-7 in favor of the Commanders. In their most recent meeting (Nov. 21, 2021) the then-named Washington Football Team topped the Panthers in Charlotte 27-21. The Panthers won in their most recent trip to D.C., also against The Washington Football Team, on December 27, 2020, a 20-13 win. Histories aside, some are cautioning against expectation, calling it a "trap game," and another nail-bitingly close one between the two. For me, it comes down to which version of Andy "The Red Rifle" Dalton Washington's defense will face when Carolina attempts to replicate the game plan used by Baltimore a week ago.
Here's what they're saying...
Washington Commanders vs. Carolina Panthers- October 20, 2024. As I see it!
The atmosphere was electric at NorthWest Stadium as the Washington Commanders hosted the Carolina Panthers. For the first time in memory the fans almost all Commanders faithful, decked out in burgundy and gold, were prepared to give full-throated support as they eagerly anticipated a strong showing from their division-leading 4-2 team.
First Half:
From the outset, Jayden Daniels was in top form. The Commanders’ offense came out firing with Daniels connecting on a 45-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Terry Mclaurin. The Commanders’ defense also stepped up, forcing a three-and-out on the Panthers' first drive. The Commanders’ offense, back to dominating time-of-possession, take a 10-0 lead by the end of the first quarter on a field goal by Austin Seibert.
In the second quarter, the Panthers fought back with a touchdown of their own, a 20-yard run by their star running back Chuba Hubbard. Not to be undone, the Commanders responded swiftly, with Daniels orchestrating another methodical drive, capped by a 10-yard touchdown pass to Zach Ertz. The Commanders’ defense then forced a crucial turnover and with seconds left in the half, Seibert nailed a 52-yard field goal, sending the Commanders into halftime with a 20-7 lead.
Second Half:
The third quarter saw the Panthers rally with a field goal, however, with a bit of finality, the Commanders quickly extinguished any hopes of a comeback as Jayden Daniels showcased his dual-threat ability, breaking free for a 30-yard rushing touchdown and pushing the lead to 27-10.
The fourth quarter was all about maintaining control. The Commanders’ defense continued to pressure Andy Dalton resulting in another turnover. On the ensuing drive, Daniels sealed the deal with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Luke McCaffrey, his first on the season, eliciting great joy from the partisan crowd and chants of Luuuuuu!, Luuuuuu! Now trailing 34-10 the Panthers managed a late touchdown, but it was too little, too late, as the final whistle blew and the scoreboard tallying 34-17, Commanders!
Post-Game:
At the game's end, the NorthWest stadium crowd erupted in celebration as the Commanders notched their fifth win of the season, solidifying their status as contenders and giving the fans/followers/supporters plenty to cheer about!
Although my preference would have been at least a bigger margin of victory (at least 10 more points) this victory will be a testament to the Commanders’ balanced attack and a better than previously seen defense. Jayden Daniels finishes the game with 328 passing yards, three touchdowns, zero picks, and 62 rushing yards. The defensive effort is easily an added topic of conversation after forcing three turnovers and keeping the Panthers’ offense in check. Enjoy the Game, Everyone!
Ok, there you have it, They've had their say and I've given you mine. Now, it's up to you! What are your predictions?... You know the drill! Good luck!
