Seems a bit steep to me.

Don't the Flyers have any good D prospects on the horizon?

that would be a no..

and i actually like the deal.. i like coburn in the top 4.. i think he's solid defensively, can skate, can move the puck, and can hit.. plus he's only 25 (i think)

4.5 mil is market value anyway

I like Coburn too, as a defensive defenseman he's more than serviceable. I just don't like paying those types of players 4.5. Call me old-fashioned.

Coburn will be 27 in Feb. so he is young.

What makes me sick is that he is now making more money than CLAUDE GIROUX.

There are few defensemen I would offer 4.5 mil to. Coburn is not one of them.

we cant judge every contract based on giroux's.. his is an absolute steal at 3.75.. IMO nobody on the team deserves more than giroux.. and yet, pronger, timo, bryz, coburn, jvr, hartnell, and briere will all make more than him next year

and 4.5 is a very low number to set as your 'very few d-men' bar.. this is a completely un-verified stat, but i'd be willing to bet that most team's top 3 maybe even 4 all make over 4 mil

edit: ok so that was a bold-faced lie.. but still, there are 27 d-men that make 4.5 mil or more, and most of those contracts were signed recently (the market for d-men has gone up a ton)

i loved him last year, but i'd rather keep carle over mesz so far this season.. at least carle has played a good game or 2 this season

We just have too much $$$ tied up into dmen over the next couple years IMO. This will come around to hurt us.

its really only next year.. timmo comes off the books in 2013..

and next year my bet is they're hoping gust can replace carle (not that far-fetched IMO) and then you're actually saving 1.2 mil off the money spent on this year's core.. i suppse you'll need kessel or bartulis (or the like) to fill the 7 hole so it'll be 300-600k less.. regardless its not much different than the money spent this year..

God Timonen makes a lot of money. Don't get me wrong, he's been very good. But thats a lot of money. It will be nice to see that number off the books.

My concern is Mez, Carle, Coburn, Pronger. Our entire top 4 is making above 4 million. I could see if they were elite defenders but they are not. They're good, just not great.

well i think the difference is all 4 of them will be making under 4 mill.. whereas most competitive teams have a top guy thats around 6 or even 7.. so you're basically 'saving' 2 mil on pronger (top paid d-man) and spending it on #4 instead

depth of star-power, and i would rather do that

plus if you look at the forward situation.. jagr and voracek are the only ones coming up that will need a new contract this offseason.. voracek will be RFA, jagr will be 40.. so i think jagr will be gone, unless he really proves, all season, that he's worth resigning, and if that's the case, he'll probably need a raise, to something like 4.5 (i dont see him being worthy to resign unless he outplays this contract).. voracek (if play continues) can easily be replaced by the combo of schenn, read, wellwood, nodl, harry z on the 3rd line..

so thats 600k saved on defense.. and around 3 mil increase amongst the forwards (w/ jvr's increase as well).. so you end up with maybe a 2.5 mil rise in salaries.. which might be covered by a cap increase, but its unlikely the cap rises.. so who knows.. but i dont think the flyers are in awful cap situation going in to next year

I just don't see a need for a top 4 D pairing to all be making this much money. I agree I'll take depth over a superstar, but right now we are pretty much paying a superstar salary (Kimmo) all the while having another 4 guys making above 4 mil.

My biggest complaint is that I feel we rushed this signing and overpaid (see: Timonen, Hartnell, Pronger, Bryz) We felt obligated to pay him now or we lose him. I'd rather drag this out and cut his price tag down. If not, let him walk. (cough Ville Leino cough)

ya i see what you're saying.. but thats not exactly true.. currently, there wont be a time where we have a guy with super-star salary, and 4 others over 4 mil.. this season coburn is still at 3.25 (so we have 6, 4.9, 4, 3.5).. next season carle wont be here (6, 4.9, 4.5, 5).. and the season after timmo will be gone (4.9, 4.5, 4).. coburn doesn't get paid 4.5 til next season

and my guess is the flyers figured that if coburn and carle will have decent seasons and then their hits are both going to be at least this high.. so you either give 1 of them the salary, or let both walk and your left with 3 d-men that are capable of playing top 4.. but then you're in a crunch, relying on free agents to fill that 4th spot and you'll end up overpaying someone anyway.. by doing it this way, the top 4 for next year is settled and you have flexibility to move pieces around this season without putting yourself in a pinch to find a 4th d-man next season

for example.. say they decided to make a move at the deadline when they have more flexibility.. and they want to add a guy that is a 4 mil cap hit for this season and next season.. if both coburn and carle were unsigned for next year, it would be risky to make that move if they both clamored for big raises.. however, with coburn signed, that move can be made freely, knowing you're not jeopardizing your top 4 for next season
