For anyone who remembers what happened to LSU in 2018 in their loss to Texas A&M, among the things most remembered aside from the insane amount of overtimes was LSU dousing their head coach in a sports drink unrelated to gators. Of all the teams to suffer from symptoms of premature celebration, the Tigers should be a program that knows better.

The reason I say that is because of this contest from 2002. Granted, the head coach back then was a dude named Nick Saban, but unlike LSU a year later and then the Miami Dolphins later on, Coach Saban was not about to abandon the ship in what looked like a certain loss to Kentucky.

Under Saban, Louisiana State remained competitive in the always competitive Southeastern Conference. UK meanwhile had Guy Morriss as their head coach and heading into this November 9, 2002 contest both the Tigers and Wildcats were at 6 wins. While LSU was coming off a loss to Auburn, Kentucky was riding high after a win over Mississippi State.

Commonwealth Stadium wasn't packed for this game, but it was a good crowd at over 66k, their 3rd largest home crowd of the season. The largest was a loss earlier in the campaign to South Carolina which along with their win over Indiana were the only home games to get 70k. Knowing that this could be the big breakout game UK needed, fans were ready to watch history and celebrate.

Which they did, but in a way they'd rather forget.

After taking the lead on a late field goal and realizing that LSU was going to have 1 play to go way over half the field in order to win, Kentucky players surprised Coach Morriss with a dunking.

Talk to your doctor if you suffer from premature celebration.

What follows is a play that on Coach Saban's playbook was titled Dash Right 93 Berlin, but has since become known as the Bluegrass Miracle, a play so revered that it even has its own Wikipedia article. Fans already on the field, not realizing what had occurred in the end zone were preparing to tear down the goalpost at the opposite end zone. So they got to witness history and celebrate, only to realize that such celebrations were foolish.

That play is what both teams' respective seasons are remembered for as Kentucky would finish at 7-5 while LSU would go 8-4, getting a trip to the Cotton Bowl and a loss to Texas out of it.

Still, the Bluegrass Miracle is what forever defines the 2002 season for LSU, Kentucky, and maybe even all of College Football in terms of lore.

Cityzen225 has the highlights.

As a bonus, here's ESPN's College GameDay Final's coverage from later that night.
