NOW! we need stability on the back end......Hit him up.... I know some wont agree with this...But I think we should do it...use him as a coach and part time player in the secondary...

The Safeties aren't why we lost yesterday. Marshall burnt Hall 3-4 times. He beat Burfict a couple. The TE beat the LB on his TD. The Safeties weren't the problem yesterday.

You dont think it should be better coverage with Nelson on Marshall??? Where the hell was the corner? maybe we were playing Zone and he got to the right spot....Just looked like our Safeties could have been in better position....The Iloka play if he flips his hips and goes for the ball he picks it off.....He also didnt want to tackle on a play for fear of his hand....I saw 1 where he was ginger with it.... I agree they need to get better but at what expense of the team????? we will see

Nelson was who was beaten on Marshall's touchdown. Hall actually graded well at +1.6.....

The pass rush was miserable. Wide open passing lanes. Marshall is going to beat any corner when he has time to run his pattern and Cutler has time and room to make his throw. Isn't the book on Cutler that you need to get pressure in his face to make him make mistakes?

Cutler was pressured on only 9 of 34 dropbacks. When not under pressure he was 19-25-0 for 226 yards, 2td, passer rating 129.6, PFF rating +5.4....under pressure he was 2-8-1 for 16 yards, o td, passer rating 0.0, PFF rating +0.6, only because he had a run that was successful, so yes, pressure (or lack thereof) would seem to be the major cause of the defensive failure yesterday.

Interestingly, Dalton was only pressured on 4 of 34 dropbacks, which I'm sure was a major contributor to his successful performance yesterday. He did complete 2 of 3 passes under pressure, which in a small sample size demonstrated improvement in performance under pressure, and the other pressure resulted in his being sacked. No blame was assigned for the sack, which I believe probably means the sack was a result of coverage.

More good stuff, on Cutler:

When the Bengals blitzed:9-11, 81.8%, 98 yards, 1td, 0int, 134.1 passer rating

When they only rushed the front four:12-22, only 54.5%, 144 yds, 1 td, o int, only a 71.4 passer rating.

Conclusion: We should not have blitzed him, at all.......

That's probably because the blitz never got to him. No pressure + fewer people in the secondary = better stats.

I wouldn't say they shouldn't have blitzed, but maybe designed better packages. But then again, with 2 rookies on the line, a new head coach, a brand new offense, I can't imagine it was easy to game plan a defensive plan.

Usually Zim's blitz packages are effective, but I guess the new offense could be responsible for the blitzes not getting there. Not sure. I didn't see how many blitzes resulted in pressures, but when considering Cutler's poor performance under pressure as well as his excellent performance vs the blitz, then I guess it's pretty easy to conclude the blitzes weren't yielding pressure. Why is a mystery.

Here are the Bengals defensive grades by position category

1)Dlinemen: +5.9
2)Linebackers : +0.1
3)Corners : +0.7
4)Safeties : -1.8

The safeties did have the worst overall grade, though their grade includes Mays' 13 plays at nickel LB, and his grade was -.8 though he was -1.0 in only 1 play in run defense. What stands out to me is that even with a couple of guys having an off day that the line was still the strength of the defense.
