I wonder what that number is for fights per practice. Because practice fights are always more meaningful.

The league needs more goals, not more fights to keep things going in a good direction. Obviously, you guys all know my stance on the subject. If this trend continues, I'm certainly fine with rules remaining as they do. Goons are nearly a thing of the past, and it's a beautiful thing.

Spur of the moment fights (as in answering for a cheap shot on a teammate) I don't have an issue with at all. Staged fights are lame.

Agreed.

Iggy fighting Vinny or Shanny fighting Foote back in the day was fine.

Good players fighting rather than headhunting or resorting to stickwork is A-OK with me.

I will say, I like the fact that for the most part the "Goons" that are left in the league at least have a certain level of skill. Jordin Tootoo for example, is the Devils enforcer but when he's not fighting he's not a complete waste of space. One dimensional neanderthals like Cam Janssen are a dying breed.

I agree, I honestly can't think of any pure goon this year. John Scott was cut, right? I mean, the Pens haven't had a skill-less goon since Godard.

I'd like to find one of the old, big discussions on this topic to see where people were on it five years ago.

With less fighting, surely the stars of the NHL are being pummeled left and right and all lost to injury, right?

I'm glad to see things going the white way.

Teams aren't even using their Fight In The Bank so much.

I learned something from that article. A little bit about hockey, a little bit about fighting. And a little bit about dinosaurs.

Sorry guys, Halloween always makes me nostalgic.

Some perspectives from 2011 to 2013...

I have watched and loved the sport for 50 years, the object of the game is to out score your opponent not out fight them. So if I stopped watching the game because they took out fighting I was never a "Hockey" fan to begin with.

Fighting has been a part of the game for over 100 years. Getting rid of it would be stupid. I think the media who want to abolish it are a soft bunch of pansies.

...just like race car drivers and the HANS device...and NHL players with helmets. OK then, we can let them decide!

I have no problem with guys that have skill and can fight, but it's the useless 4th line goons I wouldn't mind seeing out of the game. Guys like David Clarkson, Avery, etc. I don't mind seeing fight because it's not their only purpose. I said it in the concussion thread, if we were able to switch to a bigger ice surface a lot of these issues wouldn't be issues.

I like seeing blood.

I think there's a pretty big reason the nhl is the league when it comes to hockey and that's the over all product. When you make a change in anything there is always going to be a trickle down effect and removing the fights that occur for the right reasons could prove to be more harmful in the end.

I don't care whether it is a necessary evil or not, it's part of the game and as fans of the game it is in fact our responsibility to be vocal about keeping at least some of the oldest traditions of the sport in tact.

If you got rid of fighting in the NHL, injuries and cheap shots would go up across the board. Then people like you will start screaming about all the cheap shots in the game, and how it is ruining the sport.

seeing faces bounce off the ice like George Parros did just now. Im done its got to go. someone is going to fucking die in this league.

To me, though, taking fighting out isn't even primarily about safety. It's the fact that it's staged, doesn't serve it's supposed purpose, unnecessarilyputs people at risk of injury, and frankly, I don't see how it makes sense to condone fighting as a way to solve problem in fighting.

Fighting is not a part of the game of hockey. It's in the culture, sure, but it's not part of the sport itself. There is a fundamental difference between taking a harder line on fighting (read, attempting to eliminate it completely) than getting rid of hitting. Hitting occurs during actual game play. Actual game play ceases at the start of a fight. Ergo, fighting isnot part of the game of hockey.... Fighting is stupid and pointless and not part of the game of hockey, and the players' particular worldviews make them among the least qualified people to decide whether or not fighting has a place in the culture of hockey.

What does that quote be me even mean? I have been anti-fighting for some time, and consistent on it.

That players are not the necessarily the best equipped to make the decision about fighting themselves.

I tried to pick ones that didn't need much context, but I can see how yours might be confusing.

Also, hi 46.
