JBJ is fine. Even with last year's below average production, he still managed to be a 2+ WAR outfielder because of his defense. It gives him a high floor, especially if he hits closer to 2015/2016 levels.

As for Travis, I just don't think there's enough pop. I think his ceiling is Casey Kotchman, though I'd be pretty happy with 2007 Kotchman or 2011 Kotchman. I think Josh Ockimey is a more intriguing 1B prospect, though he may be a DH. I just love his combination of power (even if it hasn't fully materialized) and OBP.

Oh I'm not saying replace JBJ, not with his defense. We were discussing hitting and I said I don't trust him witth the bat in his hands, that goes double in the post season. He is just too hot and cold to be relied on. But they have far bigger problems before they get to him. Better hope Devers can deliver the much needd pop.

I'm very optimistic about Devers, but I wouldn't expect too much out of him next year. It'll be his first full MLB season and he'll only be 21.

Now honestly did Farrell truly think Marrerro was a better fielder than Devers?

he's not wrong in thinking that. Devers looked below average whereas Marrero might be one of the best defensive 3B. But the gap in defense doesn't make up for offense IMO. And as we saw, Devers' bat kept the Sox in games 3 and 4. I'd much rather have Rafael's bat in a postseason series than Devin's glove.

not surprising. You're probably not going to hold onto your job too long when you're coming off losing seasons in 2014-15 and then two consecutive ALDS exits. I'm fine with making a change, I don't think he was a good manager though I don't think he was particularly bad manager either. I just hope they'll have an actual replacement lined up and not some retread (or Leyland/Ausmus). Otherwise, I think they would have been better off staying on course with him. Remember, Tito got ran out after 2011 and they brought in Valentine.

My biggest complaint with Farrell was his slow hook, though I think some of that is hindsight is 20/20. It did feel like he left his pitchers in just to get them the "W".

How happy are you
its a weird feeling.

relieved because hes gone...but...hes the only manager to win back to back AL east titles, and won a WS...it depends on the replacement to be honest.

think farrell gets a job fast? i heard they may move him back to scouting.

just bonehead shit...from banging a nesn reporter while he was married, to the apple watches, to running everyone for home on every hit out of the infield.

then the machado thing...then eck, and i think eck was a big nail in the coffin. eck works for nesn, and the sox own nesn.

I don't blame him for that.

yeah, but if youre a guy in that clubhouse and your married manager is sleeping with a beat reporter more or less...

and its usually "us vs the media" mentality as a team...

exactly... Especially with how inconsistent the offense is

whether you thought he was a good manager or not, he was the manager of a WS winning Red Sox team. He deserves a thank you IMO, we haven't had a lot of WS-winning managers over the last century.

what a vague press conference from DD. and reports are still talking about the Eck drama? let it go already. Eck's kind of a douche anyway.

Would be an immediate upgrade as a coach on the Nationals and Cardinals.

I think its fair to say he is a pretty average manager

Steps Needed:

Release Hanley
Pitching needs to perform the way they can
Butterfield and Farrell (at least Butterfield) need to go
Pedroia probably should be gone too
Practice base running at minimum 4 hours every practice

Apparently they can't release Hanely or the option vests. That's what is being said on SOSH.

So basically he needs to rot on the bench enough to miss the 400 PAs he needs for that option to vest. So basically only hit him against some lefties. And take him out for defense after like 2ABs basically every game he's in.

Yeah this is a pretty good assessment. We all know Porcella is not a real Cy Young pitcher but he was really good last year and as the #3 guy that's pretty good. Hard to say about Wright, he is a knuckleballer so he does not need to be able to throw 96. But yeah the lineup was pathetic and it was not all the departure of Pappi. As you said those 3 were the main culprits but guys like JBJ, who I never trust with the bat in his hand, were way too up and down. What they got from their first baseman was exactly what they should have expected, and that's not good enough. I hope you are wrong on Travis, hard to say. I do think Devers is for real.

JBJ at the bottom of the order is fine with his defense.

the OF defense is a big part of the Sox success.

But they do need to find some offense at 1B and DH.

Devers is a 1B long term, and they have a top prospect, Michael Chavis, who could be the 3B of the future.

That may be the way the season ends up, or at least 2019.

There's the Jess Moran thing, isn't there?

Also could just be that Farrell is the Al Pacino HC in Any Given Sunday, fighting Management's plans all the way to the end.

If they're going to try to acquire an elite bat, I'd rather just try to pry Votto from the Reds. I think he'd be a great influence for the younger players with his hitting approach.
