Maybe In The Mix

Seattle

This is likely a package that would have to be built around MLB players, as the Mariners two top-50 prospects — Alex Jackson (#20) and D.J. Peterson (#55) — are both struggling badly in the minors this year. Jackson could be still be a piece, but the deal would almost certainly have to be built around Taijuan Walker or James Paxton, with either Brad Miller or Chris Taylor also likely heading back to Colorado, and then some combination of prospects beyond that. If the Rockies prefer big leaguers to prospects, then there could be a deal to be made here, but with the Mariners rotation already thin at the big league level, they may not be too anxious to give up Walker and/or Paxton, and it’s hard to see Colorado trading Tulo to the northwest without getting those kinds of arms back.

Does anyone seriously want Tulo and his guaranteed DL stints for such a big package?

The guy was pulled from tonight's game with quad tightness, by the way. When I heard I was shocked!

No I don't, but it will come up as the year goes by and I found it interesting to see what so called professionals thought our cost would be.

I wanted Stanton 3 years ago and mentioned giving them 5 top prospects for him and was booed out of here for the suggestion. How are those 5 doing these days? How is Stanton doing? Ya, exactly. That was the move to go all in for.

Who plays the other 80 games that Tulo will probably miss?

I don't want him, but we would actually be one of the best fits for him because we do have guys that could play the other 80 games (Miller/Taylor/Marte of which wouldn't be included in trade)

Come on Zona, you know fans who actually had a clue about baseball didn't boo you out of here. Stanton for a boat load of prospects is one thing, but Tulo for the farm is another thing. Even at his height has he ever been a real top 5 guy? I don't care about the WAR stuff, I care about needs, the Mariners have always been able to find a way to field a team that is good enough to compete with an average to below average SS and C but they've needed a COF and DH to compensate that. SS and Zunino would be perfectly fine had they sold the farm for Stanton and still signed Cruz.

Jack's problem has always been quantity before quality.

Untrue. 3 years ago Stanton was still a mystery, but I for one, and some others, thought he was worth the risk of giving up the farm but a lot on here said it was way too much for just a long ball guy that does little else.

Even at his height has he ever been a real top 5 guy?

He did have a 5 year stretch where he had 90+ RBI's 4 of those 5 years. Twice he was 5th in MVP voting. His health is the only thing that has kept him from MVP status.

It doesn't matter at what position the production comes from so you have to go get whatever production is out there and right now Tulo's name is coming up but I haven't heard of any OF or DH's names coming up.

And just to reiterate, I am not saying I want Tulo. What I am saying is that I want any hitter that can stretch out this lineup so we have more than just 3 or 4 hitters on it. I don't even care if it is an A.S. I would be satisfied with more contach hitters that can also play defense.

I guess I don't remember people critizcing you for the idea of Stanton.

I know he he has had a little stretch where he was a great caliber player but I guess I can never remember him being worth that many prospects.

I agree they need to upgrade the offense but giving up that much for a guy (IMO) isn't worth Walker or Paxton plus I believe it would be stupid. If they are going to part with that many separate it into multiple deals where you get back at least two major leaguers. Getting a MVP player is great but they need to upgrade SS and the OF

I pulled up the original thread. I even forgot the particulars, but it was what I said. Its worth reading for a good laugh. :)

ESPN's version of a Tulo to M's deal:

4. Seattle Mariners

The Mariners could offer a package that includes Taijuan Walker, Gabby Guerrero and Brad Miller. If the Rockies believe Walker can be the pitcher we saw when he was drafted and the pitcher he showed signs of this year in spring training, then this could end up being their best deal. However, there are a lot of scouts who question whether Walker will get command of his pitches and reach his potential. Guerrero has a chance to develop into a 25-home run bat in Coors Field. Miller would be a solid stopgap at shortstop.

In a way I'm not a fan of that deal because I'd prefer them to combine Walker with guys to go after an OF bat and also not a fan of Miller for Tulo unless they package a deal involving Taylor for an OF.

I'd prefer they trade for a full time OF and use Taylor as the guy at SS than get a Tulo and still have no full time LF or CF. But beggers can't be choosers so maybe Taylor would end up as a good CF?

Agree with 1st paragraph and angry with 2nd paragraph.

Pretty sad that I am looking for them to get there first real outfielder. I like Smith, but he is closer to a DH than Cruz I think. I can live with one of them out there at a time, but both really takes away some coverage. Still hoping for Gomez. Not sure if Blackman from Rockies is available, but he would be nice as well.

Great call from 2+ years ago.

I always open these older threads with caution out of the fear I'll see something that in hindsight sounds retarded.

I don't think you can get any more retarded than Mariner management itself...
