Not surprised at all. We already took a RB in the 3rd round with knee history. Gurley is a franchise 3 down back. I wouldn't have a problem if we took him at #5. The Rams weren't scared of his ACL and I think they will benefit in the future. Even if he doesn't play in 2015 he will be 100% for 2016. The draft is about the future.

Morris getting his extension at this point appears to be 50/50 at best.

Remember that thread that I started about trading Morris? Well, if you put it all together, Big versatile backs like Gore in SF and Lynch in Seattle are the types that SM likes on any roster that he's associated with. Hell, he's been quoted as saying that Matt Jones reminds him of Lynch!! If you consider Morris' s smaller stature and obvious shortcomings, I still would not be surprised to either see him as BU this year or wearing different colors this or next season. Know what you get for him next year? Nada, zip, nothing! It's obvious that the team is moving in a different direction at RB ( and they should) and next year Ammo is gonna want a significant raise. 50/50 is being generous my friend.

Not a big fan of using 1st round picks on a position you can fill in the later rounds. I'm just glad they used the pick on building the lines

Well........what you said really makes no sense when you think about it...Every position can be filled in later rounds....

But more so with running backs. Given their short shelf life, the emphasis on the passing game, and the ability to find comparable talent in the later rounds it makes zero sense to use a 1st rounder on a running back. Since 2008 14 have been taken in the first round and only 4 remain with that team.

Here are the Pro Bowl RBs from last 2 years and where they were drafted:

2014
Murray 3rd
Lacey 2nd
Charles 3rd
Forte: 2nd
Gore: 3rd
Lynch 1st
AP: 1st

2015

Bell 2nd
Foster Undrafted
Charles 3rd
Lynch 1st
Murray 3rd
McCoy 2nd
Morris 6th

Yep, agree with that. Get a first round o-lineman to block for a third round RB, and that RB will look like a first rounder.

Not disputing that...but based on what you said.....I was just correcting you...value wise...yes RBS are much better taken in later rounds....but the same can be said for most positions....Oline..DB...LB...Qb is the 1 round where Most top flight QBS are taken...obviously not all...but most

you pick the BPA regardless of position and stop following some stupid cliche's

if RBs were a dime a dozen then everyone would be an AP and clearly they are not

if you can get one and you have a need for it you make the pick and stop trying to get to cute

same with OGs etc . pick the damn player and stop with the over thinking , smartest guy in the room , BS

make the damn pick

Not to be a stickler but you said my position that you can find RBs after round 1 "makes no sense". As my follow up post shows it makes perfect sense to not take a RB in round 1. Someone else showed a stat of Pro Bowl OL and the vast majority were in fact taken in round 1 or early round 2. So yeah, still saying RB more than other positions should not be taken in round 1.

So are you saying you would have been fine if they had taken a RB when Scherff was still on the board?

After what I read from you regarding Scherff I have a hard time believing you would have been able to rate any RB ahead of your boy. Obviously I feel the same way.

Again with the barb again at the end? What's up?

You do realize that McCloughan drafted for need when he took Scherff right? Good article on that issue here:
