I'm just curious, what sort of requirements do we have for admission to Tech for athletes? I know there is always some wiggle room, but I'm just curious if we have cut offs for the SAT or anything.

And what exactly are the NCAA requirements? I know we require an extra math class or something above those.

Take a look at the information provided by the NCAA: NCAA Eligibility Requirements - High School Portal

Not too confusing, is it??

Here's the Eligibility Rules in PDF format: NCAA Eligibility Rules

Like you said, I believe Tech requires an extra science class as part of the entry requirements. From what I've read over the years, I believe that class can be either taken online or in the classroom.

They get three chances to get the correct solution, but if they get pissed and break the box they get to play defense.

Additionally, there is also a sliding scale requirement for SAT/ACT scores and GPA.

For example, with a 3.5 or higher GPA athletes are only required to score a 420 or higher on the SAT.

An athlete with a 2.5 has to score an 820 on the SAT to be eligible for Division 1 athletics.

This is often the biggest obstacle for athletes having trouble qualifying, more so than credits. (All SAT scores are verbal & math only).

How the hell do you get a 420 on the SAT as a combined score!? You would seriously have to question the ethics of that school system that graduated a student that got a 3.5+ GPA and only scored that high on the SAT. I know this evidently happens often, but I have never heard of anyone scoring anywhere close to that.

Just looked up averages for 2011 Freshman at VT:

Average GPA: 4.00
Mid-50% GPA: 3.81–4.24

Average SAT: 1250
Mid-50% SAT*: 1160–1340

I've never agreed with the exceptions that athletes receive. College football/basketball is nothing more than a minor league system.

Are we sure that isn't a 1420 and 1820 combined?

420 seems insanely low.

Also, there is no way I would have gotten into VT with the current standards, ha ha.

Here's the sliding scale for the years 2011-2012. Obviously, any student-athlete generating a GPA of 3.550 and above will most certainly score much higher than the required minimum for the SAT and ACT on the sliding scale below.

Also, I see where you guys are getting this, it just confuses me.

I get the sliding SAT score thing, but the ACT has a max score of 36.

I did not take the ACT, so I have no idea.

Yep...I looked it up...36 is the best you can score on the ACT.

National Ranks for Test Scores and Composite Score

Maybe the NCAA is using the Composite Score column for their purposes? That would make a weird sort of sense...maybe.

The "official" score reported by the ACT, is a composite score in which they average the score for each of the 4 sections (math, english, science, and i think reading). The max score in each section is 36, so when they average them the highest composite score would be 36.

For NCAA purposes, they use the sum of the scores of the 4 sections.

Okay...that explains it very well! Thanks!

Reguardless of the requirments you will always have that Dexter Manely

Academic performance has always been difficult for the NCAA to address. Any detailed regulation would intrude upon the free choice of widely varying schools, and any academic standard broad enough to fit both MIT and Ole Miss would have little force. From time to time, a scandal will expose extreme lapses. In 1989, Dexter Manley, by then the famous “Secretary of Defense” for the NFL’s Washington Redskins, teared up before the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Education, Arts, and Humanities, when admitting that he had been functionally illiterate in college. Link

LoL that was Oklahoma State, but yeah its shady how the system works. I'm not in favor of paying players but I certianly think the NCAA needs to allow these kids transfers with no restrictions.

Wait, 4.0 is the AVERAGE GPA at Tech now? That's getting ridiculous. High schools need to scale it back with the weighted courses.

No problem. Their reasoning behind the ACT scoring is beyond me. The sliding scale I think is a good model because it allows students who have put in the effort to do well weekly in school to still be admitted if they are poor test takers.

The only reason I know the in-and-outs of the NCAA clearing house is because of relationships with several athletes who struggled to qualify and/or didn't qualify. Mostly basketball players however. One actually is playing basketball in Europe now and flew his girlfriend over to propose to her on the basketball court just a few weeks ago. Great kid and a long overseas career ahead for him, just got in a hole he couldn't dig his way out of unfortunately.

A decade ago I was accepted to Tech early with my aim on one of the most difficult majors. Today, I'd be dangerously close to the bottom 25%.
