Looks like the Yankees probably won't sign Cano since so much $$ is gonna be tied up in Ellsbury. Mariners might actually land Cano since not many teams can afford him other than us. Crazy but I might buy into this one.....

If that's what it takes to land him, then by all means lets sign him!! I'm tired of sitting back and all we get is the excuse that "well, at least we made an effort". Land Cano, trade for Kemp, and make a push for a solid starter. If those three happen we'll compete next year. Of course that'll also include some lower level signings to fill out the roster like Bloomquist.

Here is Jack's actual comment-

I WANT CANO! More than I did Fielder. Anything less and i will be disappointed. I'd take Nelson Cruz on a 2 yr deal lol but that ain't happening. Just throw the bank at Cano, sign Hart and lets call it a day.

Cano would be huge for the team.

My only concern is how much of the payroll he will take up. The question we have to ask is, are 2 ~$10m free agents better than 1 Robinson Cano?

I know a lot of people have mentioned concern about him hitting at Safeco but IMO it is not a problem, his home and away splits are pretty similar and I believe his career BA is actually higher on the road.

You have to figure any trade discussion is going to involve, from the other side, either Walker or Paxton and the Mariners have to decide whether the return for either one of those guys is really going to be the thing that pushes the team into contention, especially since we'd then have to find another starting pitcher, on top of the one we were already looking for, to replace Walker or Paxton. If the M's sign Cano, trade away either Walker or Paxton for Kemp (such a trade could also involve more players on one side or both sides) and make a run at another solid starter for the rotation, sign Bloomquist to be the utility infielder and sign Hart for the outfield (with other possible deals we're not even thinking about after that), does that push the M's into contention? It could, but it's still likely to come down to how the guys we've brought up over the last few years progress, if they progress.

Does Zduriencik take a look at his situation and the team's situation after so many bad years and just say "Screw it! We're gonna give Cano 200+ million, trade Paxton or Walker for Kemp, sign Hart, pick up a couple of starters for the rotation, do a few other things and roll with it"? Does Cano come here even if we throw $200+ million at him? Do his numbers do what so many other hitters' numbers have done when playing 81 games a year here and make the possible $200+ million a huge overpay for a guy who just turned 31 years old?

I say instead of trade for Kemp sign Shin-Soo Choo.

Kemp will not only cost prospects but will also take up salary space. If we already add Robinson Cano via free agency I don't see why not just sign Choo.

I say if the Mariners sign Cano, whoever they trade for (if they do trade for someone) should have a manageable salary. Kemp does not fit into that category unless the Dodgers eat a massive portion of his contract.

The idea of Kemp, Felix and Cano taking up $65-70m of a roughly $100m budget seems a bit worrisome.

One comment I have to remark on because I read it a lot on these boards is regarding the worry of some on how Cano will hit, or any other free agent target, at Safeco. Their respective numbers will be down, period. But for this team to improve, they just need to be better than the guy they replace. Bigger the improvement, bigger the results obviously.

So if Cano hits better than Franklin, we get better as a team. It wouldn't be a failure if his numbers went from 25/100 to 17/85. It is his 17/85 to Franklin's 12/50 (or whatever numbers they had on whatever stats you want to use). I know that sounds obvious, but I do read it a lot comparing a guys old stats to his new projected stats with Seattle. We have to remember the opposing teams stats go down at Safeco as well so it is literally an even laying field.

I can't imagine that Cano wouldn't come in and be a huge upgrade to any bat that the Mariners have. Without adding a second bat, maybe a Choo, then Cano isn't protected in the order, and he'll get pitched around a lot. So, even if his power stays high, he'll probably get fewer RBI opps just from teams pitching around him during important situations.

Then there's the idea that the rumors are 9 years around $200 million. So, it's not 2014 I'm worried about his salary compared to production, it's actually an issue of whether he can stay productive to be making $20 million as a 39 year old second baseman.

While we are kicking things around with this Cano business, how about this...If they sign Cano (I personally don't believe a word of it), do think it is even on JZ's radar to go all in to try to trade for Stanton? Pipe dream, I know. But for giggles, maybe a package around Paxton, Franklin and Pederson to get the ball rolling would get talks started.
