McNabb’s No. 5 will join eight others as retired by the Eagles through 80 years of football: 15 (Steve Van Buren); 20 (Brian Dawkins); 40 (Tom Brookshier); 44 (Pete Retzlaff); 60 (Chuck Bednarik); 70 (Al Wistert); 92 (Reggie White); 99 (Jerome Brown).

I'm not trying to be a dick here, but I guess it's not that hard to get your number retired in the NFL any more.

Because going to the NFC Championship game 4 consecutive years (winning one of them) is quite easy to do.

Well if just getting there counts OU is at the top in CFB. Count them 4 bcs title games! More than anyone else. Woot!!

As for McNabb it makes me wonder who decided to do this and why now. Reggie white didn't have his number retired. That's shocking IMO.

I think he did. At least according to Wikipedia. He had it retired in Green Bay and Philly.

If players got their numbers retired for being overrated, then #5 would be retired by every team in the league like with Wayne Gretzky.

Eagles fan here...... I think McNabb faced a lot of criticism around the league and even by his own fans..... Unwarranted criticism, but I don't think he deserved for his number to be retired. When I was at the open practice yesterday, it was good to see and hear all the Eagles fans cheer McNabb when he was announced. He deserves that, and while I think he was the Eagles greatest QB, and a very good overall QB...... He wasn't a once in a lifetime QB or player, because that is what I think it takes to get your number retired.

Most overrated QBs in the history of the NFL in order IMO:

1. Michael Vick
2. John Elway
3. Donnovan McNabb
4. Brett Favre

...Vince Young would've been on this list a few years ago, but even his apologists realized they were full of crap eventually.

Most underrated:

Steve Young & Kurt Warner, then a big gap then whoever else there is.

BTW: underrated doesn't = great, and overrated doesn't = terrible. It's just hype in the numerator with production in the denominator.

Even by your wonky formula, Favre is not overrated.

Many people, namely those of the fantasy football generation, tend to forget Favre's greatness and only remember him as a waning shooting star that took way too long to fizzle out.

You're right that he's not as overrated as he used to be; most people realize he was just an extremely streaky QB who was just as likely to blow a game as to win it. But he's still one of the more overrated QBs I've ever seen IMO.

My all-time QB opinions are largely based on (1) what their stats are against the average over the course of their respective careers (I did a long study on that one) and (2) how well they performed in the playoffs. Elway actually had below average numbers for YPA, passer rating & completion percentage over the course of his career, which is why he's up there right behind the mind-bogglingly overrated Michael Vick.

I think he deserved it in Philly. He made them more competitive than a lot of their history. Not a hall of famer and he did choke away that Super Bowl, but he got them there, and for a team like the eagles I think that counts for something.
