Ducks GM on Predators: ‘We have to start diving’ - Ducks blog - The Orange County Register

“It’s become a tactic,” he told the Register, speaking at the team’s hotel. ”I’ve watched enough. First things first. We have to have less passengers. We have too many passengers right now. But when you’re playing a game and [there's] a constant stream to the penalty box because these guys are diving left and right … we have to start diving.

“I’d never thought I’d say this to my hockey team. We’ve got to start diving because it’s working. It is working. They’re getting power plays because of the diving. I can go through the list of players. You already know who they are. You’ve seen them. It’s ridiculous.”

Oh, shut the F up Murray. The Ducks have been taking bad penalties for years. He might as well have come out and said "How dare they dive after we cross check them in the back."

I hate the whining to try and influence the refs, it is becoming far too prevalent.

I havent watched this series, but he is telling the truth. Diving is really becoming a problem. I really wish the refs would nut up and start sending these fruitcakes who dive to the ice straight to the box for delay of game or something.

If this was Scotty Bowman or Al Arbour, I'd call it a great example of gamesmenship, but since it's Wahndy Carlyle and Bob "I like to toss chairs" Murray, it gets filed as whining...

I just don't get it.

I played hockey since I was 6 years old. I couldn't dive during a game if I tried!!! My instincts (and those of almost every good player I've played with) are to keep trying and my focus is always on the play.

I , LITERALLY, can't understand how these guys do it. You have to be looking for a chance to dive in a lot of these situations. Call me old-fashioned but when I had the puck when I played competitive hockey, I was looking for a chance to score.

Tomorrow in the OC Register: Ducks scouts head to Brazil and Argentine soccer fields in search of tomorrow's hockey stars.

I actually like this in a sense, because this is something that legitimately gives the NHL a reason to focus on and try to finally eliminate diving in the sport. When a GM tells his guys to dive publicly (and yes I do know this is more for the refs than his players) you know there's problems.

I realize that there's a 99.9% chance the NHL does nothing over this (probably a fine for Murray), but it sure would be nice to see Bettman do something right for once.

the problem is the NHL is so reactionary and the disciplinarians are so dense that after hearing these public comments, the refs will be told to watch out for Anaheim players diving while completely ignoring what the Preds may or may not be doing ... lol

You know what would be great to see in game 4 - a Ducks player called for hooking and as soon as somebody pipes up, an immediate bench minor for unsportsmanlike conduct. Heck, maybe the Preds should start game 4 with a 5-on-3 for two minutes.

Don't worry Bob, just have your team watch some Corey Perry game tape, they'll be diving with the best of them in no time. Only problem, if they hack slash and whack all game like Carlyle wants, and they dive and embellish all game like Murray wants, when will they have time to play hockey?

Can anyone that has been following the series either confirm or deny that the Preds have been going heavy on the acting?

It's been a fairly violent series, lots of board checking and grinding down low. No ridiculous hits yet tho. Weber and Suter have been playing aggressive and it noticeably to disrupt the all star Perry Gatzlaf line. As far as diving, I personally haven't noticed much of it, besides the current talk of Blums incident. But if you think about it, it was a very smart dive, right around 2 mins in the game and that would almost insure a win. If the ducks do start diving I would love to see a diving penalty be called on them, the coach would have to change his new game plan haha

Tootoo took a swan-dive in game 3 that was pretty egregious. That's the only one that popped into my head.
