28 year old utility infielder acquired from the Bravos. I wonder what the corresponding moves are after this signing?

Anyone want to take a guess?

I hate to say it, because I like the guy, but I'm not sure if Nate McLouth has a spot on the team for much longer.

Kovacevic has a good one for his column today about the Bucs woeful offense:

Kovacevic: Will GM ever address Pirates? hitting? | TribLIVE

I like Nate, too, but the guy is having major problems at the dish. It looks as if it has started to carry over to his defensive abilities, as well. It's unfortunate for Nate, because he seems to be a great teammate, but it is time for him to go.

Interesting news on Sutton.....I guess the Rays offered a decent list of PTBNL's.

Unreal about Stewart, he always seemed like a good guy, eventhough he wasn't much of a head coach. Very sorry to hear about it.

The TB Rays traded for Drew Sutton from us the other day. (After he had been in our organization, all of 1 day.)

The Rays, put him in the lineup right away & all he has done, is collect hits in each game he has played & today, he has a couple of RBI. (Small Sample, I Know)

Yeah, I guess we could'nt have used that on this club. Sigh...

Pitching is nice, but Damn Neal, we need to actually hit the ball & score SOME runs to win Baseball Games.

We need a bat! Any Good bat, can't be ignored.

I wonder, if the Pirates got the memo?

4 for 8 with two doubles and 3 RBI's since he's joined Tampa's lineup for only 2 games. Sutton has split time at 3rd and 2nd. Sure wish I knew why the Bucs acquired and subsequently traded this guy in less than 24 hours, especially considering how dreadful the offense is, and seemingly how few answers lie elsewhere in the system.

Since it seems like NH likes to accumulate players from certain draft years, maybe Tim Backham is on the list of PTBNL. Or possibly even Wade Townsend(had to look that on up) to add another draftee from 2005 to our organization.

Shit. I was hoping that Sutton would be our new starting SS (where he has played the majority of his innings in the bigs).

Thanks for mentioning Coach Stewart also, he will be missed here in WV.

I really don't think Sutton could handle short defensively.

No problem WVU. I have always felt, that good people should be recognized when they pass. And, no matter what team you root for. Be it Pitt, Penn St, WVU or any team.

By all accounts, Bill Stewart was a very nice man. A good person & a quality human being.

Good people of any profession, in all walks of life, should be recognized.

Bill Stewart was a Good Man.

So I pulled this from Kovacevic's blog on the Trib:
Remember Drew Sutton? He’s the infielder the Pirates acquired in a trade Sunday for cash considerations from the Braves, then immediately assigned to Class AAA Indianapolis. Later that evening, around 11, he was told he was going right to the big leagues, that the Pirates had just traded him to the Rays for a player to be named later. And then, of course, Sutton has gone 4 for 8 for Tampa Bay with two doubles (one pictured above), a walk and three RBIs. Out of the cleanup spot, no less. The guy was more productive all by his lonesome than the Pirates were as a team in bowing meekly to the Mets at the same time. That is just so Pirates.

There has been no quote on the reasoning for this from Neal Huntington, but a team official told reporters Monday at PNC Park — shortly after the trade to the Rays was announced — that it was done to give Sutton a chance in the majors. Sounds unnecessarily generous, but hold on. It’s actually more common in baseball than most know.

GMs are aware of doing right by minor-league veterans and not blocking them, so long as they feel that player won’t have an impact for their own major-league team. They’ll simply arrange deals that let the player go somewhere else. They feel it sends a good message through the industry when trying to sign those types in the future — Garrett Jones fell into that category — if those players know they won’t get stuck behind a logjam. Now, I understand even as I type this that there will be a strong reaction among some. And maybe I’ll see that as warranted down the road. But speaking only for myself and only for now, I’d criticize the Pirates primarily if they again failed to identify someone who could have helped their offense. Especially now. Check this article in the Tampa Bay Times right after Sutton’s arrival.

Look at manager Joe Maddon’s quote down below about how he and the Rays’ scouts liked Sutton “for a while.” Tampa Bay Rays acquire infielder Drew Sutton from Pirates - Tampa Bay TimesI’d trust the Rays’ evaluators more than the Pirates, to put it kindly. But again, let’s see how it plays out. Sutton is 28, hasn’t had great numbers in the minors, and it’s been three or four years since anyone saw him as having impact potential. And there is the matter of the player to be named.

Not surprised and it makes sense but not sure I am too upset Drew Sutton won't be a Pirate. Yeah he might be hitting good right now but he will come back to the reality of being a AAA player.

You're probably right about Sutton. I just find it funny that a guy who is capable of playing SS/3B/2B/1B can't find his way onto a roster where the best batting average of the four starting players currently occupying those positions is hitting .253

At this point I would think the best approach the PBC can use is to leave no stone left unturned. What harm would it have done to see what this guy has? If it had turned out he had nothing... oh well. They didn't give up a whole heck of a lot to get him.

Well he was just claimed again by the Pirates.

And since the Pirates claimed him off waivers I think the Rays still owe them the player to be named later. That will be interesting.

It's really quite comical.
