What nobody has mentioned on this thread, is that transmissions are also subjected to the cold.
Automatic transmissions are also -40 if the engine block is -40. Allowing the engine to warm allows the coolant (Antifreeze/antiboil) to warm and then transfer some heat to the transmission via the tank that is integral to the radiator. I would much rather put out a few more hydrocarbons than buy a new transmission prematurely.
The whole reason manufacturers are recommending 30 second idle time is Café standards. They are required to recommend that by our govt.
And if anyone can scrape windshield, back and side windows, inside and out, in less than a minute, either full of malarkey or not doing a thorough job.
If my windows are covered in ice, then the car warms up for as long as it take for them to melt and get clear.
That might be 10 minutes or 60 minutes. I don't give a fuck and I'm not driving my car with obstructed views.
Born and raised in New England. Learned to drive, oh, 30 minutes from Canada.
Got cold enough that I know whats what. December 1989, when it warmed up to -25, we thought it was so warm we took our coats off.
Seriously.
But it's a dry cold right...
