As a fan of SC I say defense is definitely the most important group on the field. SC holds a 4-5 record and we average 35 points a game on offense. Not only does defense win championships but it also wins games.

We got nothin' on D this year. If we were a shade of of the D last 5 years, would be going to ATL.

I was just thinking of how bad it sucks that we our having a record setting year on offense but we are also experiencing what may be the worse defense in our entire history.

Balance wins championships. A team with a top 5 offense and a defense in the 90's is going to be in lots of close games that might go one way or another. A team with a top 25 offense or top 15 offense and a top 15 defense is going to be winning games at a higher rate.

The one thing that wins games is being able to run the ball against any defense. Having a good offensive line that allows you to run the ball and possibly run out the clock is key. If WVU had been able to run the ball yesterday they would have beaten a team they gave the win in a gift wrapped box due to no offensive plan at the end and no defense to stop the opposing team. Had they done one, they would not have needed the other. So a healthy balance is good to have and if you go back, you will see most teams that own titles had this.

On either team you sport. SC nor the Panthers can claim a defense this year and I hate that the Panthers cant find one, it sucks.

Yeah. A good defense also gives offenses good field position. When the offense can start at midfield a few series, their odds of putting something on the board goes way up.

Not only that, but a good defense allows a teams offense to stay in rhythm if they can get into one and it puts the opposing defense on the field more, giving them time to be worn down.

I used this argument a few years back when it was a popular thought that a team that didnt make a title game was a better choice. Yet that team had a top 5 offense and the 99th ranked defense and was in shootout after shootout all year long. The team they would've played had a good enough offense to score on that defense and their defense was one of the top defenses in the country. The only team that could've stood on that field with them in that game did and showed why.

I know this will start the argument all over again, but my analysis of the teams is pretty spot on and I am not the only one who saw it this way obviously.

It takes a well disciplined offense to go the length of the field on a good defense. They generally shoot them selves in the foot along the way. 1st or 2nd and 15's really change the playbook options also. Field position is big.

Anyone who cites Auburn 2010, consider this...

How many games did they squirt out by a rat terd? Their offense was great, but the defense was above average, not great though.

When you have even an above average offense and a great defense, you will dominate most games. Teams that don't have great defenses, don't dominate most games. Oregon this year is another good example of that.

Well, their offense was also the most efficient in the nation and they had a Heisman winning QB.

They still have the Heisman winning QB and 7 starters on O returned, including 6 all Americans.

FSU destroyed teams with their D.

I believe at the college level Coaching is the primary factor. It's why the SEC has dominated titles won in the BCS era.

A lot of the teams that won titles had great Ds. Some Had great Os and decent Ds.

I don't think teams with crappy defenses win national titles. You might see some high potent offenses make the playoff like Baylor/Oregon but they will get seal clubbed before they win it.

Just the opposite here. We have a great defense and an offense that sucks balls.
