people will bitch and moan about the 4th spot instead of the 2nd spot like they do now.

every year is a little different. some years there is a clear cut deserving 1 and 2. the texas/alabama year, the texas/usc year... and even this year.

but other years, a 2v3 with the winner getting #1 would be better (ok st vs bama with the winner playing lsu, for instance). and still other years, a 4 team playoff would be perfect (2004... usc vs utah, oklahoma vs auburn).

too bad there isn't a way to let the season play out and then based on the circumstances of the season, a method to determine the champion is determined. obviously the logistics of this (among other things) make it impossible.

I still like the way things were done before it all started getting weird.

The Orange Bowl might be #1 vs. #3......not necessarily the National Championship game, but any team in the top 4 could potentially win that way depending on how the voting turns out.

I am a firm believer that the old system was the best.

there should be no rankings until the ooc schedule is complete, or in the case of the sec after the 4th week of the season.

A 2v3 can be the same as a 4 team playoff with an additional game instead of a defacto bye for number 1.
If there is no decent number 4 then 1v4 2v3, 1 beats 4 and winner of 2v3 plays 1 in the championship game.

Same as your scenario but they just generated more hype and sold a lot more tickets.

I agree with this except for the pairings. Put all the schools in a hat and have at it with the initial drawing for pairings.

no thats why I said in the case of sec the 4th week. I dont know why anyone would sign up to play an Alabama team late in the season, that always baffled me.

or the play off will be the sec invitational with the sec getting 2-3 spots. look at this year Bama auburn mizzou all right there.
