5 Dodgers will make over $20M this season: Kershaw, Greinke, Gonzalez, Kemp, Crawford.

I'm a broken record of this, but here we go again.

I am very happy that Kershaw now has the highest AAV contract. I am NOT HAPPY though on the amount, as I think it skews the competitive balance of baseball.

That said, until they do something about it or change the rules -

Dodgers sign Clayton Kershaw to $215 million deal. Mark Attanasio paid $223 million for entire #Brewers franchise. Can you say "disparity?"

I knew he would get $30 mil per year. I wonder if this effects their negotiations with Tanaka?

What a joke. I love my hometown team, but this type of stuff just makes me hate MLB so much. Small market teams will never ever ever be on an even playing field with the Rockefeller's of the league.

Kershaw makes more than the entire Padres roster, which will make a '14 Padres pennant that much more enjoyable.

I'll let you know how the Padres look when I go to AZ in a month. However, if I were you, I would not be holding my breath on that prediction.......

The Dodgers don't need Tanaka, but I don't think that will stop them.

The Dodgers' TV and radio rights are more valuable because the team is in Los Angeles, the second-largest television market in the country. The Brewers are in Milwaukee, ranked 34th largest TV market in the U.S.

There are an estimated 5.6 million TV households in Los Angeles, compared to 902,000 in Milwaukee. The only MLB market with fewer TV households is Cincinnati, ranked 35th in the U.S. with about 898,000 households.

MLB figures that 34% of a team's local revenue is available for redistribution to eligible teams in the league.

Do the math.

Even if you take around $2.3 billion out of that $7 billion for revenue sharing, the Dodgers keep about $4.7 billion. Over 25 years that averages about $188 million a year. And that's just from the TV rights. Radio is not included.

Last December, Brewers general manager Doug Melvin told the Journal Sentinel that the Brewers' local TV contract with Fox Sports Wisconsin paid the team $12 million in 2012. That was thought to be the lowest amount for those rights among all 30 MLB teams.

Melvin said the Brewers will get $21 million for those rights this season, the first year in an extension agreed to in 2009. Sources have said the extension is through the end of the decade. So the Brewers' revenue from their local TV deal averages about $167 million less each year compared to the Dodgers.

And you wonder why fans of small market teams have been calling for a salary cap.

I have been wanting both a cap AND a floor for MLB salaries for YEARS. Well before the Dodgers were in the position they are in now.

And, as I keep saying about it, until they change the rules, might as well enjoy the spoils the current rules allow. It is far too much to expect of anybody to be given a competitive advantage, and then NOT use it.
