I am pretty sure MLB is just interested in expanding its brand in the Pacific which is already pretty good with Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan being big consumers already for the sport. Australia would be a nice boon for the talent base too. We already see Japanese, a few Taiwanese, and a trickle of Australian players. Only makes sense for MLB to capitalize and expand where it is popular.

Me neither, but shit happens. Pedro got destroyed by the Marlins in '99 (and that wasn't a very good lineup either, last in the NL in runs scored and had a team OPS+ of 87). Cards had one of the best lineups in the league.
