Well hindsight is 2020, and I am more worried that he looked like crap before the injury then we are adding a Tommy John Surgery on top of it. I am not a hater I am glad he got his money before the injury so his family is set for life but it is an unfortunate circumstance for our payroll.

Now for your list of pitchers I think only gilbert and kirby are locked in. Miller I would have to see how he fairs the rest of the season. I am not sold on Woo yet. Hancock has been getting shelled in AA so I am having reservations that he will be nothing more than a bottom of the rotation guy. I wouldn't write off Ray yet especially if we are paying him.

My personal thoughts:

The only good thing about the R. Ray signing was that it showed the Mariners would actually open up their wallet and pay the going rate to acquire a top notch player ( *cough cough )

Sadly Ray did not perform up to expectations and that likely will make the Mariners even LESS reluctant to splash the pot again anytime soon.

Not a cheap shot against Ray, just speaking from an analytical point of view.

I'm hopeful for Robbie Ray coming back and at least providing 175-190 IPs of 3.60 to 3.90 ERA pitching. The success rate of Tommy John surgery is over 85%. Verlander, at age 38, came back from TJ and won a CY Young Award.

Not at all. He really only had like I think it was 30 bad innings, otherwise he was a Cy Young guy. Granted he left a huge sour taste in your mouth with his Blue Jays and Astros series (which if they had a real manager he would’ve flipped the rotation and sure as hell not bring a pitcher with no confidence to face the best player in the league.

As @seattlefan75 mentioned, hindsight is always 20/20. We entered the 2021 season with Marco Gonzales as our ace believe it or not.

Honestly I had high hopes for Robbie Ray this season as I had heard in spring training his velocity was back up where it was when he won the Cy Young with the Blue Jays. It's a shame he had to get TJ surgery.

Tommy John surgery doesn't seem to be the death sentence it once was, and it seems like recovery time is faster than it used to be. At this point I think it's on him to put in the effort to get back to where he was before the injury. If he doesn't, then I'll say I regret it.
