Just a guess, but the same thing that kept him from being a first rounder. He is a big hitter with coverage issues. Thats fine for a SS that plays alot more in the box. Houston had him at FS

HE apparently has some attitude issues also. He became such a headache that they couldn't trade him and finally just gave up on him and cut him. Do we take a flyer? It depends. Do we need that type of headachE? I might give him a shot, but make sure he knows that the first dign of trouble, he's gone.

If he is in fact a big hitter with coverage issues and head problems I'll pass. There's a reason he is available and we've got enough possibilities at SS, we need a FS who can cover.

Damn right you sign him. He can play CB too.

He has talent but he is a head case.

So one of the primary reasons he was cut was he went to the HC and told him he was a 2nd round pick so he doesn't play special teams. We already have one player that dictates how he should be used. We don't need another. Pass.

Taking a look at the positions impacted by the Redskins' draft: safety.

Who they drafted: S Kyshoen Jarrett (sixth round)

i
Key holdovers: Jeron Johnson, Dashon Goldson, Akeem Davis,Trenton Robinson, Phillip Thomas, Duke Ihenacho, Da'Mon Cromartie-Smith.

Starting battles: As of now, none. Johnson will start and primarily play strong safety; Goldson will be the free safety. It’s hard to see that changing given the competition. But neither starter is a lock in this role for more than a year. Johnson has started one game, but he played behind two outstanding safeties and was a key reserve on a championship defense. But he has to prove he’s a quality starter. Goldson did not live up to his contract in Tampa, and there are doubts about his effectiveness. He’s only 30 so he might have something left. He is a physical player considered good in the locker room. The Redskins need him to be Ryan Clark -- with a few years left.

Remaining questions:

Have they solved their safety woes? Tough to say they have. But the secondary will be helped by a stronger effort from the front seven -- not just as pass rushers but against the run as well. But, as pointed out above, there are still questions about the current starters. Right now it’s just projection as to what Johnson might do and hope for what Goldson might have left. Were his issues in Tampa about injuries? Scheme? We’ll find out. The Redskins have swung and missed on players in his predicament too often in the past. The Redskins need him to play well, or at least not poorly. I am curious to see how the others have progressed and if any of them can develop into anything other than backups.

How can Jarrett help? As a special-teamer. He has a reputation for physical play and as a special teams standout. That’s what the Redskins could use as much as anything. To expect anything more than special teams contributions as a sixth-round rookie would be asking an awful lot. It was a bad move two years ago with Bacarri Rambo and hastened his exit; sometimes -- often times -- it’s best not to play too soon.

Do they have interest in D.J. Swearinger? Yes and no. The ex-Houston safety is on their radar, but a source said the Redskins would keep their roster intact for now. They’d have to put a claim on him so, based on this conversation, that didn’t seem to be a likely occurrence. However, the source said, if something happens in the future, they would look at Swearinger (if he’s available). He’s only two years removed from being picked in the second round so he clearly has ability. However, he did not play well for Houston, with lapses in coverage and tackling problems, and he has off-field issues (he had them in college, too) -- and it’s startling and revealing when a team cuts a former high draft pick after only two seasons. Granted, Bill O’Brien was not the coach when the Texans drafted Swearinger, but it’s still a shocking move. Various reports now say Swearinger once walked out of a special teams meeting because, the story goes, he was above playing on these units. If you’re trying to build a certain culture, it’s hard to imagine this being the mindset you want. But the Redskins were careful about this in the draft, and it's why they did not draft Randy Gregory and stayed clear of La'el Collins. So if there's some interest, even for down the road, it's a little interesting.

so there is our safety depth . still a lot of questions dean , and look at swearinger and his issues . he isnt just a head case , he had coverage lapses and tackling issues to boot

Well...you were wrong then....and I think you are still wrong.....I want SOLID football players, willing to put team needs above his own opinon of himself......

I am sick of getting other teams rejects and hoping that here in DC...they will suddenly change....

he is what he is......an overated guy with an opinion of himself that is not close to the actual player he is...

NO THANKS!!!!

So the vt tech safety was worth a 6th round pick but Swearinger wasn't worth a 7th round pick to the Texans? Wow.
