Down Goes Brown: Offseason winners and losers

lol... ouch.

Winner: Ottawa Senators - Free agent Zenon Kenopka signed a $700,000 deal and could provide excellent value while competing for the second line center role, which is great news for Senator fans as long as they don't think too hard about what it says about the rest of the roster.

Don't make Coley angry (the play-by-play guy, that is)

Winner: Montreal Canadiens - Signed Erik Cole as a free agent, making them the only team on Hockey Night in Canada to be ensured of having a player whose last name Bob Cole will pronounce correctly.

Loser: Toronto Maple Leafs - The revamped assistant coaching staff is already confusing players with talk of a complex new penalty-killing system, replacing the past years' strategy of everyone standing around asking each other "Hey, am I crazy or is one of us missing?"

Winner: Colorado Avalanche - Critics who mock them for potentially trading the first overall draft pick to Washington for Semyon Varlamov are overlooking the fact that the young Russian goalie could possibly play well enough to turn it into the second overall pick instead.

Obviously my fav. I do hope Varly does well... the year after the upcoming one. :)

You have to admire the Sens fans for sticking with the team. They've had such a long fall since their Finals appearance. Right now they're arguably the worst in the league and they aren't making many moves to improve that.

Ottawa has perhaps the deepest prospect pool in the league (NYI and FLA deserve mention too) despite only missing the playoffs twice in the last 15 years.

They'll be pretty bad this year, but they're rebuilding properly. If they get a top 3 pick this year they should be set for the foreseeable future.

As Sens fan I'm way more excited for this season than I was for last year; at least we should see some youth and energy instead of the likes of Kovalev circling aimlessly on the ice while Cory Clouston's head turns red on the bench.

Spezza's been a question mark in my mind. He may be able to command some value in a trade that would produce much more when some of that youth develops. Alfy's a good guy to have lead them, but the time is coming where a turnover will be necessary. They're kind of stuck with Gonchar right now, but he'll be valuable in training the next powerplay QB that comes in, so that's not a total loss.

All in all, I'm missing the short-lived rivalry that they had with the Penguins.

To go back on topic: JVR good, Hartnell bad. Wait, wrong topic!

Last year Spezza and Karlsson were the only bright spots.

After Spezza's return from injury he was about 1.2 PPG (with AHL linemates) and killing penalties REALLY well.

I think Jason sees that within the next year or so this will be his team and has matured. He's turned into a damn good two-way player. I never thought I'd say that because he used to make me pull my hair out, but he looks to have taken the next step in his game. I highly doubt he'll be traded any time soon.

Winner: New Jersey Devils - By signing Zach Parise to a one-year contract, continued to wisely uphold their longstanding club policy of never signing superstar wingers to deals in the two to fourteen-year range.

Loser: Edmonton Oilers - Even though they don't really have a strong rivalry with the Canucks these days, newly acquired forward Ben Eager won't stop talking about all the time he's going to spend in the penalty box the next time he plays in Vancouver.

I can't really think of any other value there. I admit that I don't know as much about their roster as most of the teams in the league, but where else can a significant positive change be made?

There isn't much veteran talent left on the squad. Gonchar might fetch something decent at this year's deadline (or next). Kuba just needs to go (last year of contract, but anyway).

The improvements in the next year or 2 will come from within. Let young guys like Silfverberg, Rundblad, Karlsson, Cowen, Zibanejad, Butler, Filatov, Noesen, Peumpel, etc. develop. Hopefully out of that group, and what is likely to be a high 1st rounder this year, a good young core can be formed. Ottawa already has tonnes of cap space and will have more in a few years. Once that happens then bring in some FAs and such when they are ready to compete (2013 would be my guess).

Or... fuck it. Finish at the bottom of the league for about 5 years like the Hawks and Pens and compete that way. :whoo:

I'd put the Sens in the top 5. Their defense prospects are really good. It's the forwards I'm not sold on yet. We shall see.

Anderson is the key for Ottawa. If he plays like he did at the end of the year they'll have no shot at Ryan Murray. I've already conceded Yakupov to the Oilers.:D:

Agreed on Anderson. He was amazing last year. I just don't see him keeping that up for a full season.

As for Murray/Yakupov... I'll settle for Grigorenko.

Unfortunately for you, I don't think the Isles will have a shot at the #1 pick this year. Their rebuild is well underway. I think they start climbing the standings starting this year.

The 2012 draft is very deep, especially on defense. I read somewhere that Grigorenko could fall in the draft due to signability issues.

Strome is expected to sign his ELC soon.

You forgot one thing in regards to the Islanders climbing the standings. They still have Red Light Ricky.

Loser: Boston Bruins - While most modern offseason training regimes emphasize cardio and endurance instead of weightlifting, foolish Bruin players have spent the entire summer repeatedly lifting 34.5 lbs over their heads.

Jeff, I see you've already given up on the Dolphins. Is that some kind of record?
