Devin Hester just score his 20th punt return TD against his old Coach, Lovie Smith.

Hester is on fire tonight... Punt return and a reverse running touchdown.
Congrats Devin- you are Ridiculous!

Of course he got a "taunting" penalty as he ran in like Dion Sanders. Oh Devin you're press conference is going to be so funny.
Nice job though bud. (now don't do that against us)

Couldn't be happier for him. Too bad he did it with Atlanta.

Off to a nice season. The Forced Fumble was great too.

He'll get a few more before the season's through IMO

He got comfortable, then got upset when his offensive role was cut and I'm sure he got upset when Lovie was fired. Change was good for both parties. We have nothing close to what he used to be returning kicks, but his production was not matching his salary.

He looked a step slow his last season with the bears. He looks like he got that step back this season...

Maybe Lovie thought hey why not we are getting our ass kicked I want to see Hester break the record and kick to him on purpose.

I think you're thinking of 2012. He had some of the best return numbers of his career in 2013.

Deion was at the game. He said he was happy he did it in front of sanders and lovie, but then was sad Lovies team was doing so bad. He was surprisingly understandable.

He was a return guy only here. The opportunity cost of resigning Hester, ponying up for Urlacher, etc. is that you aren't able to rebuild until your team grinds to an absolute stop. I'm a big Hester fan, I'm glad he broke the record (wish it were last year), and I expect him to return a few more this year (just not on October 12)... but I'm glad we're being sensible with how we are spending our free agent money by pouring it into the trenches. Hester is awesome and he is part of the Falcons offense which makes him more valuable to them... but for us it would have been $3M for 5-6 snaps per game.

Also... in Atlanta he's running on turf every home game and his division away games are in good weather. It is perfect for him.

Not that it really matters now... but going back to last year, I could have swore the reports were that Hester didn't WANT to be part of the offense, he just wanted to concentrate on returns. Was that BS? Was he just being a company guy? Or am I mis-remembering this completely?

Either way, we had one of the best pass offenses in the league and in Bear history... so it turned out well for us in that regard... but hearing him take shots at the Bears for not using him on offense confused me a bit. I thought the narrative was that was what he wanted.

I never heard Hester say that, I remember hearing Trestman say they were only gonna use him as a return man.

Bottom line, we dont know if he chose Atlanta because they offered 3 years 9 million, maybe because of Deion legacy, maybe because they said they were gonna use him in the offense.

At the time, Trestman said that reporters would have to ask Hester how he felt about that and that’s just what happened when Hester did an interview on WLS in Chicago Sunday. The answer is that Hester’s just fine with making returning his full-time job in 2013. Hester said it was “kind of” his idea to concentrate on returning after a disappointing 2012 season across the board so that he could get back to being the player he wants to be.

“My door is not closed on the offensive side of the ball. I’m still open to it,” Hester said, via the Chicago Sun-Times. “But as of right now, I know that I’m going here first into this season as the main kickoff return man. As of right now, that’s my main focus — to get my swagger back.”

Concentrating on what Hester does best seems like a good idea for both the Bears and Hester, especially with Hester sounding totally on board with the decision to try to build on his 18 career return touchdowns. It was a potent part of the Bears mix that was missing in 2012 and one they could really use in 2013.

What was the roster like at that time?

Pretty sure Hester replaced by full time receivers. We know it was Marshall, bennett, sanzenbacher was a great receiver that could not make the cut  Wasnt the drug dealer brought in here by then?

Just saying the writing was on the wall, I think Hester got ahead of it and saved alot of face instead of having people think he was not good enough to break in to the lineup as a receiver anymore. Couldnt understand Devin, but that doesnt mean he didnt get ahead of the questions of why he was not playing offense.
