Follow up question-- Who was the opposing starter when he lost his first game? (I think he went into that one 8-0)

J.R. RichardNo, but he did play on some teams with Carlton.
No, this guy didn't have any great seasons like Richard. He is best known for going 5-0 after being called up in his rookie season on the team that won the World Series.J.R. Richard

This should give it away. His rookie year was 1980Another clue?
I got no idea on the Cubs catcher that hit a bunch of home runs. Is he well known? You guys still need to get mine. Northeast was very warm.
Homer in the Gloamin'
This should give it away. His rookie year was 1980
edit--it should give it away if you're over 40. If you are a more recent baseball fan, it may be kind of obscure
one more hint. This guy was part of a group of young players that came up that year to help a veteran team get over the top. Some of them were named Smith, Moreland, Saucier, AguayoNo idea. I may have to cheat.
CorrectWas the catcher Gabby Hartnett?
Also, this guy was so impressive in his September callup that the team had one of their pitchers come up with a bogus injury so he could be on the postseason roster
whether it is cheating is debateable I guess. But Ruthven is incorrectI looked at a Phillies roster from the early '80s and decided it could be Dick Ruthven. Is that cheating?
what a stupid fucking player to pickI guess this is one that you either remember or you don't. He was huge for the Phillies in 1980 but other than that and being the first one to beat Valenzuela, he had a very uneventful rest of his career.
His name was Marty Bystrom
