Does anybody know why the d-line plays a yard off the line of scrimmage?

It drives me nutz to watch that, without knowing what they're trying to accomplish.

Thanks in advance

It has to do with Bo's read and react defense. The 1 yard is supposed to give them 'the edge' to read the play quickly and react...which works very well with a formable DT like Suh or that guy from LSU or even a slightly above average DT like Crick. But when you have a Rome or Steinkuhler who just aren't very good...well...you give up running yards like no other NE team.

I never played line, but back to the days of pop warner football and beyond I remember the coaches teaching the D-lineman not to let the O-lineman get under their pads. Made sense to me.
Seems playing 1 yard off the ball would give an O-lineman a better opportunity to do just that.

Rich Glover and a few other greats always looked like they were lined up off-sides.

There were a few times last night I thought UCLA lined up offsides.
