Chad Henne can throw a ball 85 yards.
Carson can throw it 75
Tony Romo can throw it 67

Although he's not my favorite person, I'd take Romo over the other two as a starting QB.

I can't find data on Dalton's deep throw, his throw to Brandon Marshall in the pro bowl traveled about 55 yards.

Boller could throw the ball 85 yards on one knee.

Dalton also hit Green in stride earlier this month on a ball that went over 70 yards in the air, according to Reedy. Throwing deep balls, I will contend, is not just about arm strength, but also about anticipation, reading the defense, and timing.

Been hearing of Dalton's improved arm strength......of course it's Hobspin, so I'll wait, ever hopeful, until I see for myself.....he needs to complete 3-5% more passes this season for the west coast offense to be really successful....

Joe Flacco can throw it 200 yards.

While Dalton doesn't posses the arm strength that would be required in a spread/vertical attacking offense, his arm strength for the WC and ability to anticipate throws fits perfectly into what is being run now.

The arm issue would be a huge issue if this were Bob B's old offense. It's not. The WC is predicated on anticipation and the ability to read defense and deliver the ball quickly. All of which Dalton was/is able to do.

It's not that simple. Without the threat of a long pass, the defense can allocate more defenders on the short-intermediate routes making the offense ineffective; so while it's true that many WC offenses are predicated on the short-intermediate, the long ball has to be effective for an efficient offense. In fact, many of the best offenses in the league are WC offenses with dynamic vertical games. Pats, Saints, and Packers to name a few.

Agreed, but the Bengals will take their shots, and Dalton and Green (and hopefully others) are going to haul in their fair share of "long" passes. AJ did it several times last year. That part is going to happen.

What I am refering to with regards to the WC/arm strength is that, unlike Rodgers/Brady, who can just cannon the ball whenever they want down field because of their arms. Dalton will work on recognition and timing to get the long pass completed. If he can recognize sooner that AJ has 1-1 coverage, or that it's a Cover-3 with only a CB dropped deep, and get the ball in the air sooner, AJ can haul in the pass with 1-1 coverage sooner, as opposed to having to wait too long causing Dalton the need to actually throw the ball further through the air to reach AJ.

I agree that he doesn't have the luxury of waiting til the last minute and throwing the ball 70+ yards multiple times a game like Brady/Rodgers, but if he can time it right, learn to recognize the defenses early enough and spot the match-up, he can complete a 70 yard pass multiple times during a game without actually having to have the ball travel 70yards in the air multiple times.

Still say the kid is growing and his arm will get stronger...everyone remember when Brees arm wasnt like that when he came up here as a rookie and spanked our ass??....(2001). He will get better and cont to improve... I like his smarts his toughness and leadership.... He takes it to the next level in 2012.

Hue Jackson will be OC in 2013 if he does because Gruden will get a HC job...

Gruden coaches the Chargers in 2013.

I saw Dalton put plenty of zip on intermediate routes last year (with accuracy). I think AJ bailed him out on some long ones, but I think it's more of an issue of timing than lack of arm strenght. Certainly though he needs to get better with the deep ball but overall I'm not conncerned about his arm strength. It's not like he's post-surgery Pennington out there.

He'll be the 20th or so best QB in the league. You can understand if I won't hop on the wagon. He's just not very good...nor will he ever be. We'll be drafting our next starter in 2 years time.
