The Indianapolis Colts are trying to sign defensive end Robert Mathis to a new deal but if they can't, they told him they will use their franchise tag on him by Monday's 4 p.m. deadline, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Mathis has paired with Dwight Freeney to give the Colts a lethal combination at the defensive end position.

The three-time Pro Bowler had 9½ sacks last season. His 83½ sacks are second on the Colts' all-time list behind Freeney's 102½.

Mathis, 30, was drafted by Indianapolis in the fifth round of the 2003 draft.
