SOAPBOX: They have to implement a system of monitoring every players brain health. The technology exists, and I know how it's being implemented at a much lower level, so they have no excuse not to use it in the pros.
******Dion Phaneuf joke goes here ******
I remember a couple years back they were comparing injuries now to the 80's-90's and one conclusion that was drawn is that players in previous generations had less padding and protection and their game reflected that fact. They learned "good" habits that helped to lessen the likelihood of certain injuries because they came from a generation of players who couldn't really on their equipment to prevent most injuries. Just another angle on the debate that I thought interesting. :D

I can see that. Even in beer leagues, it's invariably the guys who are wearing full cages that are skating around with their sticks at head level. they feel invincible, and seem to think that every one else is, too.

Exactly. I've seen it too many times in the beer leagues and pick up games where those wearing full cages are the most reckless players on the ice. The equipment does lead to a feeling of invincibility.

It won't happen for financial purposes, but I wonder how much it would help to switch to an olympic/European size rink. It's the cliche players are bigger, faster, and stronger than they were. Open up the ice surface to allow for more skill players in the league.

Works for me. We already brought half of Europe over anyway.:)

That's a great idea but I don't see 32 new Olympic size rinks being built any time soon.
