I count 20. Yikes.
NHL
Hamhuis, Orr, Perron, Tangradi, Crosby, Asham, Sauer, Laperriere, Gaborik, Boogaard, Rakhshani (...Islanders?), Salvador, Lombardi, Scandella, Richards, Mueller, Pisani, Ivanans, Savard, Slater.

Those are merely the ones listed as concussions, I guarentee you some others listed like "dizziness" or "illness" may just be concussive symptoms being kept on the quiet. That's a scary amount. Prevention is key Gary.

That new helmet looks pretty good. I like the adjust-on-the-fly feature. I think the reason a lot of hockey players don't wear their helmets properly is because they fit them off their heads. This will allow them to wear their helmets tight without struggling to remove them afterward.

Looking forward to seeing some players giving them a shot I was impressed.Do you feel the new shock system will provide the added protection they speak of

I don't see why not. I honestly think most of the issues come from players wearing them too loose, though.

That was one of the main thing messier brought up when they were talking about the m11 helmets. He to feels players wear their helmets so loose that played a big role in the design process.all the other stuff was for additional safety I know the owners loved them during the meetings last year.Thats why i'm surprised i havent heard more.

By the way, Hamhuis will be back in the lineup Tuesday, so you can take him off the list.:)

seems some players in the league are wearing the m11 helmets mostly guys who have had previous concussions. The main problem is others feel they are bulky or are not sure they are comfortable with them.from what i've just read seems similar to the wherther or not to wear a visor situation.

^^^^^ This.

Oh and maybe mandate that elbow and shoulder pads do not have a rock hard exterior. Would a half inch of soft foam on the outside offer lest protection? Nope.

Quick comment: I agree on the helmet thing (although I believe that's the bigger deal in the NFL, because if you're wearing it properly, it'll never be popped off during play), but the recent hits (for example Crosby's) wouldn't have been prevented by a different helmet. In that situation it was more of a whiplash mechanism (similar to Comeau's as well) that caused the concussion. SOAPBOX: They have to implement a system of monitoring every players brain health. The technology exists, and I know how it's being implemented at a much lower level, so they have no excuse not to use it in the pros.

The players have to start respecting each other. I don't care what type of helmet one wears, as long as they go for checks to the head, there will be concussions. They are caused by the brain being jolted against the skull. Helmets don't prevent that. Have you heard about shaken baby syndrome?

I remember a couple years back they were comparing injuries now to the 80's-90's and one conclusion that was drawn is that players in previous generations had less padding and protection and their game reflected that fact. They learned "good" habits that helped to lessen the likelihood of certain injuries because they came from a generation of players who couldn't really on their equipment to prevent most injuries. Just another angle on the debate that I thought interesting. :D

In my mind this is the second largest factor, the first being only the better understanding of concussions these days (that is, I think there were a lot more of them in the past than was known).

One easy example would be goaltenders. They used to stand all of the time, but as the pads got bigger and the masks got better (or came into existence in the first place) it became safer and more effective to drop down.

We have to keep in mind that concussions probalby existed in similar number back in the day, but guys just ignored them. That said, now that we know the true danger, those players from days past are lucky to be alive. But yeah, these hits didn't occur quite as often, and I'd agree that the padding has something to do with it.

So this begs the question... which defender will be injured next? (Salo being the obvious choice)
