Seems that Kirk does enough stuff right that you'd want to keep him around. Whenever he gets too confident he tends to throw interceptions and when he's not he tends to dink and dunk. That's not an elite QB, but he may get close enough to there as he develops. He does enough stuff right and can run Gruden's offense.

I don't know why you wouldn't just franchise him to get another year of watching him without making a long term commitment. Sure it's a lot of money for one year, but you can work the cap around that, and it keeps your commitments down long term in case he goes into the shitter like so many QBs before him. I'm not too familiar with your cap situation, but it seems like you guys would have good consistency going into next year on offense and that alone is worth some extra money. Spend your other resources on the defense.

If he gets this team to the playoffs this year, we will give him 17M a year!
true that. i think he's going to get a nice deal anyway on the FA market if they don't resign him but i have a feeling he's staying put.

The problems with franchising Kirk are

1. The Tag is $20 million for a QB, $25 Million if you do exclusive rights
2. We tag him, he plays and blows up... we are now looking at still trying to resign him and the price goes even higher.

Best option is to sign him to a 4 year deal, that average the $17 million a year but leaves the team a couple of outs without killing us if we do have to release him. Kinda like the Kaepernick deal.

Cousins may not be an elite QB but he is not garbage either. He is, for now, a mid tier signal caller who Was can win with when they get the proper pieces, in place. $17-20 Mill seems reasonable, considering we will not be signing his checks.

There is a subset of our fan base that is waiting for KC to make a blunder so they can proclaim him a back up at best.

There is also a subset of the fan-base that think he is more back-up than starter, but waiting/hoping that he distinguishes himself as a QB that can be a legit week in, week out starter in the NFL. Capable of beating teams other than the Tampa Bays, St Louis', Philly's, and New Orleans of the league.

Most of these also believe RG3 got a raw deal.

I'm beginning to wonder if there's a subset of fans that keep using RG3 as some false rationale for why all Skins fans aren't on the KC bandwagon.

Unfortunately He will make some mistakes going forward, all QBs do. There is a real possibility that he will have another multiple INT game, maybe this week.

Sure, but if he does. I hope it's not the same kind of multi-INT game where it seems that he's crashing n burning and has lost all his composure.

But anyone looking at KC objectively has to admit that he is improving with more experience. I don't know where he tops out, but I don't believe we have seen the finished product yet.

Agreed.

Good pt. In four of their five losses Cousins appears to have played a big role in terms of untimely INTs. The Patriots game is the exception. Given the makeup of this team there is a good chance of them losing several remaining games. The test for Cousins is not just wins/losses but rather his role in the outcomes. I certainly hope that he has the turnover bug behind him for the most part. Being a Redskins fan it certainly is tough to be totally optimistic in this area. Let's hope all of them prove us wrong.

1.Why is 25 million too much for only one year?

2.If he proves he's worth it, then you have a franchise QB and he's worth what he's worth.

Giving the team a bunch of outs doesn't serve Kirk's interests. After Kaepernick's deal why would anyone else do that to themselves? If you sign him to 4 years at 17 mill and he goes into the shitter now you've wasted 51 million future dollars. If you let him play on a tag you waste zero future dollars. Isn't it worth the "extra" 10 million to give yourselves a whole offseason and 16 more games of evaluation?

The difference is, a 4 year AVERAGE $17 million dollar deal might only have $25 million guaranteed that will hit over 2-3 years. If we tag him at $20 then need to sign him, in effect you are guaranteeing upwards of $30 million and if he DOESNT sign at the end of the year, the new tag then becomes %120 of the previous tag. And %17 of your cap as a possible one year rental is too much to spend on ANY single player. In effect the exclusive rights tag is almost 1/5 your cap for a single year rental on a QB. Hell I like Kirk.... not that much though.
