It just depends on how he finishes the season, but if not, who do you replace him with? And how much is that going to cost? Just realize that if you bring a QB in from FA, you are starting over for the most part. QB is the one position you don't want to be cheap on if you think you have a guy that will work out.

Not sure why the Post would even mention the franchise tag, that will not happen. I was prepared for this, starting quarterbacks get paid. But I really wasn't expecting this kind of money if the figures are accurate. But as we've discussed all year what other option does the team have?

The Redskins have one of the better personnel guys in the NFL in SM and Allen who works the cap better than most so I feel confident that they will do the rt thing in this area in a manner that still allows them to develop the rest of the team.

This all comes down to Cousins performance for the remainder of the season. My only real fear in this area is the Cousins doesn't push too much in any of these games & revert to some of his bad habits. One of the more impressive plays by Cousins against the Saints was when they were in the red zone & everyone was covered & Cousins threw it away & they settled for a FG. We never would have seen that last season or earlier this year - we need to see more of that behavior.

A good indication of the team's willingness to pay is the extension for RG3. SM was willing to pay him $16.1m next year if he worked out. You can also point to capernick in SF and the contract SM designed for him. He had the potential to make some big bucks, but there were also outs for the franchise if he didn't work out. I expect a similar type of deal for KC.

Here's a article from a cat who's very much in favor of signing Cousins. In fact the writer thinks it should be done right now. The writer, at least imo, uses at least one stat, comp %, in too much of a void. And just when you start to think, he's riding KC's jock like a fan-boy. He brings it back with an honest criticism of KC. He (the writer) thinks Cuz can be a top ten QB.

Why The Redskins Should Extend Kirk Cousins Today

Dave, do you know who this writer is and if so. What are your thoughts on him.

17 to 20 million......a year, at least imo, is too much to pay for KC at this point in time.

The Market is what it is. We go through this every off season the only difference becomes, who is the player in question. We as Skins fans always tend to split down the lines that nothing on our roster is worth market value based on how the team has been finishing. In this particular case, you have to ask though... will there be a better option available in FA? If not, will there be a cheaper and potentially better option in the draft who will be there when we pick?? Odds are we will be faced with either resigning Cousins at around the going rate, or sign some one like Colt McCoy and draft a rookie. Option two might be cheaper, but not sure if its better for the team going forward.

If you don't bring him back you are basically turning the clock back on your franchise 2 years and sending a real bad message to the rest of the locker room. Trent, Reed, and Kirk have been our best performers this year.

its not 17-20 mil per season. That is the total deal. He will get something like Foles got. KC will make anywhere from the 10-15mil range per season. The only way he gets 17-20 mil per season is if he takes us to the NFC Championship game. I am getting my information from tandlers article.

all i am going to say is i said if you paid KC 12 mil a year (21st in the nfl mind you ) that we had 2 posters who were balking at that and thought 5 mil a year was the way to go as far as an offer is concerned .

one wanted to see more (which is fair ) and one said that was a starting point ( 5 mil a year )

i cant see an old retread , or a hoyer or weeden or mallet is any kind of answer for us . we should go with colt at that point

you also have 3 at 16 mil if this was a "sit down and learn year "

if KC plays well down the stretch like he has the past few weeks we are going to have to take a crow bar to our textual wallets and anti up

if he stinks then you are looking at mccoy or cutler

OK guys, lets stop all this hopeful crap all ready. No way in hell is Kirk a possible answer for us at QB. We have to start dissecting

PAxton Lyunch
Jared Goff
Connor Cook
Jacoby Brissett
Christian Hackenberg

and my personal favorite

Cardale Jones

Scot McCloughan’s history with quarterbacks

First of all I hope that everyone take's Sharks comments with a couple lbs of salt - good effort in lightening up the mood Shark. Anyhow - as this discussion progresses it is interesting to drag out an old article about SM and his approach towards QBs. I truly believe that he would like to refrain from using very high picks on QBs especially in an offseason where there does not appear to be an elite prospect.

As per the article & other indications it would appear that SM would like to continue to use the early rounds to build other areas of the team. Also - his experience in drafting A. Smith may make him a little gun shy in reaching too high for a QB. We will see.

Glad you caught that Socal.

As far as us drafting a QB.. even if we resign Kirk, and he does in fact blossom into a high 2nd tier QB that we can build around. I got to say, if he manages to fall to us in the 2nd, or by some stroke the 3rd... I would not complain about us drafting Jones there. Would a burn a first and hand him the keys?? NOt a chance in hell. BUt then again I would be hesitant to do that with any rookie QB in this class. I would grudgingly think of taking him with a second depending on where we picked... But a 3rd, assuming Kirk is the designated starter and looking like a mid to long term answer... .well I would drop a third to have this kid play sit and learn.
