Yankees Receiving Significant Interest In Brett Gardner

By Jeff Todd [December 7 at 12:16pm CST]
After inking outfielder Carlos Beltran last night, the Yankees have received "significant interest" in Brett Gardner, reports Andy McCullough of the Star-Ledger ([ame="[MEDIA=twitter]409382660545712128[/MEDIA]"]via Twitter[/ame]). The club is willing to deal Gardner, says McCullough, though it is not actively shopping him.
Gardner, 30, is projected by MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz to earn $4MM in his final go through arbitration before reaching the open market next year. The capable center fielder posted a .273/.344/.416 line in 609 plate appearances last year, good for 4.2 rWAR. Though his value is limited by the lack of significant team control, his low salary and ability to play any outfield position make him an intriguing trade target.
Meanwhile, for the Yanks, dealing Gardner is one possible way for the club to address other needs while using internal options in hs place. Though he played center last year in the Bronx, Jacoby Ellslbury figures to occupy that role going forward. The team could keep Alfonso Soriano in an outfield role, rather than shifting him to DH, if it were to make a deal. New York also still has Ichiro Suzuki under contract for next season, and the recently-signed Kelly Johnson spent a good deal of time in the outfield last year for Tampa.

If the right offer is made, anyone can be had.

I just hope they're asking for pitching in return.

Jonathan Papelbon for Brett Gardner, with the Phillies taking on at least half of Paps salary the last two seasons? Does that seem fair for both sides?

I'd love to see Gardner in Detroit. No idea what they'd have to send NY but Kinsler would seem like a player of interest for Cashman. (I'd want a Yankee package deal if this were the case.)

Gardner for Kinsler? don't know how that would help the Tigers but certainly the yankees.

Gardner for Fister would have really been smart.

Unless Amaro is paying at least $10M per season, no chance. There's also a vesting option, I believe. Phillies have to pay that in its entirety.

Jumping off @YankeesWFAN's Tweet, one AL evaluator says Reds would have to consider dealing Bailey for Gardner and a lower-tier prospect.

I got into an argument with my father... I am a big fan of gardner my dad is not... He wants a daniel murphy for gardner trade... i say that is awful... would anyone do this trade??

I would trade gardner for at least a legitimate #3 SP...

The Mets now have 4 outfielders so a move for Gardner doesn't make much sense. I believe both the Mets and Yankees would prefer to get pitching for their trade pieces. Although as a Yankee fan you should want a Gardner/Murphy deal, Murphy is as consistent as they come.

Do the Padres need a CFer? I would take Chase Headley for him, we need a 3B as A-Rod is probably going to be suspended for the year. Bet the Cardinals wish they held off on trading Freese, they may have been able to make a trade for Gardner to play CF for them.

But do the Yankees really want to have Soriano and Beltran playing the OF every day? Gardner and Ellsbury would be a great defensive tandem.

If the Yankees can get Bailey for Gardner, Cashman should make the deal.

Agreed, need another SP and apparently the Yankees don't like the odds of Tanaka being posted now that this new posting fee system is in place and the Japense team only gets $20 mil.

Would be a very Yankees thing to do once they can finally play him in CF and thus get full use of his skill set, just keep him.

The league is flush with pitching, a guy that can play great defense at a premium position, and be an average hitter is valuable.

They already have a better CFer
