I have a 4 part computer question.

Has anyone ever had a problem where when you turn on your PC it starts to turn on for a few seconds then turns off then back on then off then finally it actually boots up on the 3rd try.

That doesnt sound like a software problem to me, would you agree?

Since it actually starts eventually is it a given that it will get worse or can I ignore it for a while?

Which one of you effers has been messing with my PC, and how did you get by my security system?

I had a problem similar, Comeds. My guess would be overheating?

Maybe. If it was turning off after it was on for a while I would think so more, however when I push the power button to turn it on it hums for 2 seconds then turns off to start the cycle. I wouldn't think it it could overheat that quick after not being on.

It sounds like a hardware issue to me.........could be a bad power board or bad inverter

That's my first guess too. Take some compressed air and blow the shit out of every orifice. Note... Do this outside. :thumb:

When I had my recent computer problems, mine would be on for a while, then reboot itself. It turned out to be the hard drive, probably from overheating. I had to replace the fan right above it a month earlier. The problem all started because of dust build up (this is the dustiest house I've ever lived in).

The machine would have to be running for a good amount of time before it could overheat.

Thanks guys. Puck, I have opened it and sprayed the inside with air before and unwisely did it inside. That was a huge mistake. I opened it earlier and cleaned it. Didnt look so bad.

The machine would have to be running for a good amount of time before it could overheat.

Thats what I am thinking too. I am going to unplug the peripherals and reboot it later. I read that if there is a power supply problem that if I unplug them and it starts right up I could at least narrow the problem down.

not true when the clogging gets bad. My old laptop would not make it through re-boot.
canned air, and boom. fixed.
sounds like Comeds has tried that, so he's now beyond my expertise :typing:

I just sent a refurb back last week that was doing pretty much the same thing. It was fixed and shipped back; it should arrive by Wednesday. I'll let you know what the issue was when it arrives.

My computer eventually ended up only being able to turn on for about 3 seconds, then shut right off; I couldn't even make it into BIOS.

Oh yea, if the fans get clogged up the computer is programmed to just shut down........but in order for the machine to actually "overheat" it would take some time. The electricity would have to be running through it for more than a few seconds anyways........but yea I know what you mean about dust and stuff clogging it up. That happens a lot.
